I've come into an old Blue and White G3/400, and am trying to decide how to upgrade it. I don't want to pour too much into this, but the machine is good and still has legs.
I'm looking at upgrading the processor, which is a ZIF-based CPU. My options are either a G4/533 or a G3/900. Usually I'd say go for the G4, but in this case, considering the vast difference in speed between the two, I'm split. The two processors cost about the same.
This machine is going to be a secondary machine at home (my primary is a PowerBook). I'm likely to just use it occasionally - to watch a DVD, rip a CD for listening on my iPod, check email, etc. However, this will all be occasional use. I will be running OS X on the machine.
If I was ripping CD's daily and using Photoshop all day long, the obvious choice would be the G4. However, as these are just occaional tasks, I'm not sure I would gain the benefit of the G4 - I might be better off with the 900Mhz G3 chip instead for its speed.
So... you're opinions please - which would you choose, and why?
Thanks!

I'd get the G3. I had a G4/450 and and iBook 600. They both had 640MB of RAM. The performance on them was identical on tasks that were not utilizing 3D hardware or lots of disk IO. If you extrapolate that out, you can say that a 710MHz G3 would be equivalent to a 533 G4, and a 900MHz G3 would be faster.

I asked this same question 6 months ago, only then the choice was G4/450 or G3/800. Everyone said to buy the G3/800; which I did and my B&W got a new lease on life.
Go for the G3.

G3 900, no question. The MHz difference is too huge to justify the G4. Even Photoshopping should not be noticable slower on the much faster G3.
