I eventually decided that I might as well go for a Dual 2Ghz G5 rather than the 1.8Ghz. So I contact apple to change my order.
They said it would add 7-12 weeks onto my ship date am I sure I want to change it.
I of course said yes, but I got to wondering if that was just a scare tactic to try to get people who ordered the single processor ones to take the. Because everyone seems to be buying the Duals not the single processor.
Part of the reason I changed my mind about it was lots of people have used and speak highly of the dual G5, but no one seems to have used the single processor ones. Except the mention in one article that the single G5 wasn't as fast as a single Xeon but a Dual G5 was faster than a Dual Xeon.
Anyone else change a single processor order to a dual?

I changed my order from 1.6 to dual as well. I originally ordered as soon as the Apple Store site came back up after the Keynote, and was disappointed to learn I would lose my place in line...
Just seems like if you want to try squeeze 4+ years out of a computer, the dual 2.0 will age MUCH better.

Well, it depend on what you using it for. My Dad want's a new Mac and he wants a G5, not because he needs it, but b/c he wants it to last for a while. He would be find with the latest iMac, but where will the G4 be in 5 years? This is why I think Apple need to get G5's into iMacs as soon as possible, Apple has just caught up, the iMac's need to be in that range too, leave the G4's to the eMacs. At any rate, he will be getting a 1.8, upped froma 1.6, it's just a better value. Now that I think of it I hope Apple does not sell too manyy 1.6 G5's, it would send a clear message to Apple, "We Want Speed". I think your shipping delay has more to do with filling the vast amout of Dual G5 orders and I am sure the plant shut down at Fishkill did not help, I don't think it is a scare tactic.

There are already people waiting for the machine you want to order. Apple must either add you to the end of the queue or place you somewhere in the middle and make the remaining portion of the queue wait even longer.
So apple has the choice of either bumping everyone's order date... or adding you to the waiting list. Personally, I think they're making the right decision. The G5 models aren't the same product. If a customer wants product A, they must get on the waiting list for product A.
Sorry bub, no scare tactics here. You've simply got to wait your turn like everyone else.

I wasn't implying I thought I should get in the front of the line. I was implying they might be giving extremely increased ship dates to maybe convince people not to switch to the Duals. It seems to me so far the Duals are outselling the singles by a lot and I'm sure they have plenty of the singles they'll want to get rid of

200mhz really isn't the issue between the 1.6 and the 1.8 in my mind. It's more about the different system architecture. I'll most likely get a 1.8 only because since I want it to last so many years, it'll hold up better being on the common architecture as opposed to the low end one shot, aka "yikes"

I suspect that Apple will clear the backlog on the dual-2GHz more quickly than their estimates. I bet by the end of September you'll be able to go into a store and walk out with one.

I agree completely. All the more reason for apple to drop the 1.6Ghz model. The processor speed difference is to insignificant, not to mention the "middle of the road" motherboard on it.
They should instead make a single 2.0Ghz system the new low end, and a dual 1.8Ghz the mid machine. There is no real speed sacrifice with these options (the 1.6 doesn't even seem to contend right now, and the single 1.8 is way overpriced, especially compared to the Dual 2.0, not to mention the wondering of how much better the 1.8 would do if it only had a dual processor), and I would guess that each machine would sell equally well (well, the Dual 2.0 might get a slight edge), unlike now where the Dual 2.0 is getting practically all of the attention and 1.6 gets virtually none.

Yeah, this would be great for *us*, but Apple wouldn't sell as many from the high end. I'd like to see something like that when things settle down a little.

Yes, it would be great for us, and that's the whole point. Folks would buy what they need. If Apple did happen to adopt the lineup I described in my previous post, I'm almost certain that the top 'o the line model will still be the hot seller, but the folks who have to settle for a lower model won't necessarily feel like they're "settling" for something less, or making too big a compromise based on what they can't afford.
