Hey all. I didnt pay too much attention when the G4s came out, and I was just wondering how long it took after G4 Powermacs were announced for the g4 powerbooks to come out. Is it possible that macworld in January for us to see G5 powerbooks?

Almost a year and a half... Chances of G5 PB's in January 2004 are VERY slim.

There are heat issues which aren't just going to disappear overnight with both the slimline form factors of the PB and the xserve...

There are unfortunately no guarantees...

'You pay your money and take your choice' at the end of the day. You would not be the first person to buy a product only to see a new one come out, I guarantee you would also not be the last!

The best advice is to wait until you can wait absolutely no longer...

However, if you are unlucky, just because something newer comes out doesn't mean your current machine is any less cool or effective at what it does.

Peace,

Marc

i'm sure apple has some sort of water-cooling system in the works. i think conventional cooling just won't cut it anymore as these chips run faster and hotter.

A G5 Powerbook would be nice until you put it in your lap. After it has cooked you testicles and rendered you sterile, you might find yourself annoyed by the fact that the battery has died only ten minutes later. But not to worry! You've still got plenty of heat left to fry a couple eggs if you act fast.

I don't think we'll ever see water cooling in laptops.

Personally, I also suspect that the PowerBook G5 will ship in a year and a half or so, after the PowerPC 970 moves to a 0.09-micron process (hopefully probably...).

The 0.09-micron PPC 970's (I'll call them PPC 970-II's) would run much cooler than the current PPC 970's and require less energy.

In a year, the PPC 970-II's should be available, but I suspect that most of them would be used for the Rev. C Power Mac G5. (After all, going to 3-GHz is much harder with a 0.13-micron process than with a 0.09-micron process.)

As such, January 2005 or so would probably be when the PowerBook G5 is released.

The G5 Powerbook would be handy for college students who are sick of dormitory cafeteria food. Think George Foreman!

It I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you.
