Hey:

Almost new 1gig eMac went to sleep as usual (screen dim) but wouldn't wake up with usual keyboard touch, mouse touch, or even power button tap, hold, etc. Finally had to pull the plug and restart. Fine now. Hoping it never happens again, but just in case...

Questions: Is this a eMac issue?

OSX.2 issue?

Special way to configure sleep?

Could running classic have affected anything?

I searched here and Apple discussions - nada.

Thanks!

Haven't heard of this issue at all, hasn't ever happened to me. I don't use classic and don't think there is any special way to configure sleep to stop this...sorry...shut it down or just stay on your mac 24/7

Happened to me once or twice in 10 months. Unplugged and replugged keyboard and mouse, and all was well. Never did figure out what happened.

Mrs. Pandi-

It's almost new. Call AppleCare and ask them what they think?

Can you make it recur at will? Doing so would help a technician be able to diagnose and recommend the solution.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

I have seen a USB controller (on both PCs and Macs) completely stop instead of just sleeping. This prevents the mouse/keyboard (if plugged into such on the PC) not wake the unit. This is why many PC makers still ship PS/2 kbs and mice. Unplug and re-plugging any USB device forces a restart of the chip. A restart of the USB controller wakes the machine.

This usually does not happen consistently. Classic running (or OS 9 booted) seems to trigger this slightly more often, but the worst case I saw had this happen once every 6-8 weeks. The customer did not want to be without it to replace the logic board, so I don't know if replacing the controller will fix it, or if it is more software.
