Er.. a bit off topic but:

Will I have to buy memory that is advertised as "dual channel" in order to be able to use it in my 1.6 G5? I have two 512mb 2700DDR sticks in my PC that I'd like to take out and use in my Mac..

Thanks

Oh, and another.. If I wanted to have 1.5 GB of memory in my Mac, could I install two 512MB sticks and two 256 sticks?

idyll - As long as your each pair of DIMMs are the same spec, you shouldn't have any problems. If you want RAM that's guaranteed to work, use Crucial's selector - its on their frontpage. I've just ordered a pair of 128mb DIMMs for my 1.6Ghz (I'd get more, but RAM seems rather expensive ATM. Worst comes to the worst, I'll mug my PC).

Dual channel I believe means that they bundle together two identical DIMMs then charge you extra, and I've only seen Corsair doing it. So, unless someone wants to tell me I'm talking nonsense, I wouldn't bother looking specifically for RAM that mentions it. Couple of identical sticks from Crucial should be just great.

Oh, another supplier: Kingston.

Yeah, there is no such thing as dual channel DDR. It's just two sticks of memory.

Memory must be installed in pairs, but each pair can be different. So 2x512 + 2x256 will be fine.

I like Crucial simply because of the service, and they always provide good RAM. It may not always be the highest spec'd, but it always is appropriate for the machine intended, and they never sell you the low end crap.

You can't do that. On some PCs what happens is it works, but you lose dual channel mode, so memory access is much slower.

On the G5 Power Mac, I dunno, but I suspect it won't work at all (like some PCs).
