I've already got a 1.6Ghz on order, but my resolve is breaking. I had originally planned on using it for games, but can't help but think about the fact that it'll be sitting next to my XP 2400+/Radeon 9700 Pro PC, so games are either going to not need CPU/graphics significant, or be better on the PC...
To be honest, most of the work I do is development, in Java, and I've got a 700Mhz iBook that's fast enough for that (but the screen size is driving me nuts). I want to get a G5, they're pretty any shiny, but I'm slowly realising that spending £400 I can't really afford to spare, on speed I don't need, is a little ridiculous.
So please, persuade me I need a G5. Maybe the Apple store are the sort of people that send goons around to kneecap you if you cancel? Can someone give me a convincing reason that the apocolypse will happen if I buy a G4? On a more serious note, anyone think its worth me buying a 1.6Ghz G5 over the 1.25Ghz G4s?

It sounds like you don't need a G5, esp. if you don't want to spend the money.

It honestly sounds like you do not need it for what you're doing considering you've got a powerful PC for your gaming fix. I'd cancel it and get a G4 system that fits better in your budget; it's more than powerful enough for your tasks.

Let me correct the games comment. I was buying a fast Mac, for games. I really shouldn't have broken, and bought the PC, I should have saved and bought a dual 2Ghz instead. However, I live and learn (or die trying). I'll call Apple in the morning, thanks a lot for everyone's input.

At this point the main benefit of the G5 will be Photoshop render times, and working with digital movies in Final Cut/iMovieetc.
If not doing movies or photoshop, then a G4 will be just fine.
However the resale value of the G4 may not be as much as the G5's. There are going to be A LOT of used G4 towers up for sale over the next 2 years as people upgrade to G5s.

Cancel the g5 and a pick up a 20" or 23" Cinema display, DVIator, and a switcher. Hook both your pc and your ibook up and you'll be good to go! (Although, the 20" + the 17" is the same price as the 23" - food for thought)

Don't get nuffink until you see the new monitors, keyboards and mice and the machine comes with Panther preinstalled. Otherwise your costs will rack up and you'll have a Power Mac with an eMac keyboard and a Cinema Display with no aluminum casing.

Hooking the iBook up to a bigger display - great idea, but it still only outputs at the same resolution, which is what I meant by size. I do a lot of different things at once, so need as much desktop area as I can get. Its also not my iBook, its on loan from work. Some people get cars, I get laptops - the point being I can't sell it.
So, I've changed the order. My new G4 should be here in a little over a week. Oh, in particular, having bought a lower spec, I'll probably upgrade in a relatively short period of time (15-18 months), and hopefully pick up a G5 just as they really mature as a platform.

Like lots of computer games? Get a fast PC.
I do lots a web development. MacOS X is just freeBSD running apache. Cool stuff. I'm going with a Mac. In fact I just bought myself a Dual 1.25GHz G4. I don't need a damn G5.

Are you up to your eyeballs in debt, or just to you nipples? Because if its your nipples, you need a G5.

This is all the convincing I needed. Since my eyeballs are covered in debt and my Mac is a slow G4/533, the G4 1.25ghz is my best option.
Charge it!

What the hell?
I placed my order of for a Dual G4 1.25GHz on 8/20. I won't ship until 9/4. How you get your G4 so quick? Must be the base model.

If you can afford it, I always recommend a dual processor machine for any multitasking operating system like MacOS X.
If you're planning to purchase a machine you're going to keep for a number of years, pick up a nice dual 2GHz G5. If you don't need extremely high performance and a machine that will last for many years, pick up a dual G4.
