Recently the local public school system dumped many of their old macs from the mid 90s. On a trip to the town's recycling cneter i found a number of 5xxx machines about to be scrapped. I ended up picking up about 3 performa 52xxs and one power mac 5500. The 5200s are on the slow side, ranging from 603s at 75mhz to 120mhz but the 5500 runs with a speedy 225mhz 603ev processor and even includes ATI grahics support, RCA/SVID in and out - all in a convenient all in one design. Unfortunately the machines were smashed to all hell leaving me with an interesting project on my hands. I've just finished the 5500 and it works quite well. I also put a coaxial TV tuner in the unit that i pulled from one of the 5200s. i'll probably be putting the rest of the parts in some peroforma 63xx/63x chassis that i have around as they utilize the same motherboard design as i don't think i'll be able to salvage enough 5xxx shells to complete anotehr box. Anyway... when i hooked the machine up to my cable television apple video player does not pick up anything at all coming from the coax. I'm not sure its its a defective tuner card or what. I suspect its the software thats not working properly but i can't be sure. Anyone have experience with TV tuners on these machines?

Have you tried connecting a simple rabbit-ear antenna or something, just to check that the input works? If you get a bunch of static, that's a good thing... let it auto-tune and try to pick some channels up.

Thanks, i've got it working now. I ran a clean installation of OS9 and it just worked. I had done this already, but i had forgotten that at that time i had not yet installed the tuner card. Although... the RCA and S-Vid inputs did not work either and they were installed at that time which was strange. Anyway, its working now and after sanding the word "BROKEN" off the front, upper bezel (which was written in huge indelible marker) i have a very nice machine. (oddly enough i tested every part in the unit when i rebuilt it and they all performed perfectly -even after a hard fall into a dumpster full of obsolete junk)

P.S. Where is that other Power Mac I ordered back in June?
