As luck would have it the speaker plug broke off in the jack and I can't get the remnants out, not even with a magnifier and fine tweezers. Until I can get a new machine I'm hoping to find another way to get sound...perhaps a separate sound card? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I use the Griffin iMic. It uses a USB connector, thus bypassing the audio jack. It mainly used as a microphone jack, but it also has audio out as well. Works really well.

You could also get USB audio speakers like the Harmon Kardon sound sticks.
