OK. I saw Macsolutions.com selling 1GB DIMMs for the 1GHz imac. Can this machine support 2GB of RAM?
Doesn't Apple say the max is 1GB total?
Has anybody out there put a 1GB DIMM (SO-DIMM or not) in their iMac?

I just checked MacSolutions.com and they didn't have the 1gig option just 512. Though it would be REALLY cool if you could overclock it with a 1 gig chip. I'd be interested if anyone has tried this and if it would work!

Well, either they lied, or their website is wrong.
Look at this: http://store.macsolutions.com/pgi-Product%20Spec?DDR1GB
Says "imac" at the bottom along with other models.

Try asking MacSolutions??

The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

From the MacSolutions website.
Choose memory, then 1ghz iMac 17"
1024MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz CL2.5 PC2100
(Note: Macs can accept a maximum 2GB total RAM) $249.00
Note this memory chip is intened to be used in 1Ghz 17in Imacs only.

But at the bottom it says....
Works in
Xserve
Dual 867 PowerMac (Mirror Door)
1GHz PowerMac (Mirror Door)
17in 1ghz Imacs
I think this is very strange. Why just these machines?

Why only those machines? Memory Management Unit (it's a chip on the logic board). 1GB DIMMS require newer MMUs to be seen and used correctly.
I have installed a 1GB DIMM in the internal slot on a iMac (17" 1GHz) for a customer. She had a 512MB DIMM in the SO-DIMM slot. Total, per ASP: 1.5GB RAM. Been running with no problems two weeks now.
I have not seen a shipping 1GB SO-DIMM, so I do not know if you can take the iMac to 2GB RAM. I think you could, but do not know.

Trans Int'l sells one for the 12" powerbook for $499.
