I just posted a link over at Ars. IBM has released XLC for OSX.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum - maybe developer or something. I figured with all the talk of benchmarks this may be a nice development to improve performance of the G5 on OSX (not that I think it was lacking )

Yeah, I know. I didn't think to look here first. I checked the Software and OS X forums before I posted.

Anyways, I am not a programmer, but nonetheless it seems interesting. Hopefully it will produce faster output than GCC 3.3 does.

Considering that CodeWarrior scheduled for the MPC 7400 generates faster code for the G5 than GCC 3.3 with G5 optimizations all on (at least for the Maxon engineers trying to optimize Cinema 4D XL 8.1 and Cinebench 2003 for the G5), let us hope that XLC generates faster code than CodeWarrior.

With IBMs linux blade servers using IBM 970 AKA G5 aimed at headbutting with dual Xeon servers they do have a interest in having compilers that can wring out every bit of performance there is in the system If that spill over into the BSD based OS X, I am just happy about that.

I do hope we see a very fast transition to good compiles for the G5. The G3-G4 transition was depressing as it took a two years for the G4 to get past the performance of a B&W G3/450 ( With the G4/733)
At least we will not experience the the 68k to PPC transition all over again were the good 601 CPU was bogged down both by endless emulation in the software and throttled by outdated hardware (slow SCSI, NUBUS etc).

Good news
