I'm looking at getting a Dual 1.42 from MacWarehouse CLICK HERE and I was wondering if there was a USB2 card that would work with this computer.

(Before you suggest I get a G5 the computer HAS to work with Virtual PC and now apparently the G5's don't. I'm sure the new iMac (whenever it's released) won't be as fast as this dual 1.42.)

Thanks in advance!

This one will do perfectly fine. If you need more ports, this one should provide enough.

BTW, the next update of VirtualPC will almost certainly be compatible w/ the G5. As long as new PowerMac owners cannot use VPC, Microsoft loses money, and you know they can't let that continue for long.

That is way too long for some users, including me. This means I cannot buy a G5 but have to upgrade my G4 with a a Dual processor... Damn.

Thanks! I appreciate the help. And yeah, VPC 7 isn't expected for a year or so. I really can't wait that long. I think this dual 1.42 will do me well. Though I wonder how available upgrades will be in the coming years...?

Oh Apple won't stop supporting the G4, and the PCI/AGP/RAM slots in it are the standard fare, so any future upgrades will surely work. As far as processor upgrades, PowerLogix and Sonnet are already working on Dual 1.6+ Ghz upgrade chips.

Rumor's are that the USB chipset in the MDD G4s will support USB2 except that Apple did not write drivers to run it at USB2 speeds.

Will 10.2.7 or panther instantly upgrade all MDD owners to USB2? It would be nice, wouldn't it?

I guess one way to check would be to see if Apple uses the same chipset in the G5.

Anyone know?

I had heard that too. I've kept my ear to the ground and haven't heard anything.

It's doubtful Apple will suddenly add USB 2.0 support to the G4's, as they're not likely to promote their weaker systems when they can sell more expensive ones.

I agree, but they may not be able to help it. If it's the same chipset, the OS may automatically allow USB2 operation on older G4s. I guarantee Apple will not advertize it. Apple usually does not mention older systems in any way, shape, or form once newer systems are out.

We have but to wait...

Does anyone know if PCI USB2 cards which don't work at full speed in a G4 will work in a G5?

I know Orange Micro cards work in a G4 (at USB2 speeds) but a good many don't.
