When the cover came off it sounded like the Nvidia 5800 (I think) with the "dustbuster" fan on the PC. But you couldn't get it any quieter...

Only if you take the plastic insert off, with it in you can't even hear it. The CD door looks like it could take your finger off.

the door is part of the cooling system, acting as a reflector. if you remove it, the system fans go into high gear to prevent a meldown

I must admit I thought the cd door action would be a bit smoother than it is

Maybe I'm odd, but when that CD-door went down, I immediaitely saw that as the coolest single function I've ever seen on a computer! It's SWEET how it just goes down outta the way...mega cool to me.

I haven't seen it in real life, but I thought "slide down and out of the way" action was very cool. I'm growing to like the design more and more.

The CD door is not as smooth and quiet as I'd like - it should be damped more - but it's hardly a deal-breaker.

The G5 I looked at yesterday did not get quite that loud when I removed the plastic liner. With the liner on it was inaudible, at least in a relatively quiet store.

Dope. Saw the 1.6 in CompUSA yesterday, it's very quiet indeed, and quite easy on the eyes.

I'm not going to call an ambulance this time because then you won't learn anything.

Buried deep inside Apple's PDFs about the G5 is the fact that when you remove the door, not only do the fans kick up to high speed to account for the lack of air diversion the door creates, but the processors, all 3 models, throttle down to 1.3GHz.

I wonder if someone could test this with some "cover on, cover off" benchmarks?

nope

i said "holy SHyT!"

when i saw that. coolest thing i saw a computer case do ever.

P.S. saw at a comp usa yesterday and i admit it is big, it is very beautiful too. but if you look at any normal powermac or any workstation class PC for that matter...they are all quite large.

Re: getting loud

Well DUH! It's designed to be run with the cover on. This is like saying "my car gets really bad gas mileage and really bad road visibility when I drive with the hood up."

It was designed to run closed, and so if you open it, it goes into "i'm gonna try and not self-destruct mode" basically.

Because the plastic thing makes sure that the fans' air flows past the components that they are suppposed to keep cool.

Remove the plastic thing, and suddenly you have a situation where air is more likely to flow out the side of the case (path of least resistance) than through the heat sinks that keep the processor(s) running cool.

So, the computer has to blast the fans to force enough air through when the plastic side panel comes off.

thats not just the new powermac. that's for the most part any computer with a fan. the fan is supposed to blow air towards the processor.

I am going from a Powermac G4 400 and I thought my CD door coming open was load... I was hoping it wouldn't have to wake my roommate up. I guess I got the wrong computer for a quiet CD door!

Neet trick. How'd you get ahold of a dual G5 before even the Apple Store?

When I was at CompUSA today, they had a 1.6Ghz G5 on display and I noticed that the CD-ROM opener was different than the one on the video. The one in the video folded strait down, like a gillatine and the 1.6ghz G5 @ CompUSA went down like a folding gate. I was wondering if they have 2 different ones since the 1.6 Ghz G5 is sort of the "low-end" model?
