OK, so we have talked a lot about G5 shipping in the past few weeks. I am very disappointed to log in this morning and see that my 2.0 DP machine which had been OOB 8/29 is now OOB 9/26. Frustrating. It is pathetic that Apple works this way.

Same here. 8/29 to 9/26. I knew better than to trust Apples first date. They really suck when it comes to meeting their deadlines. I had the same problem with my 17" PB.

I ordered a 1.8 on the 23rd- my order has also slipped to the 12th. I ordered the ATI 9600, but otherwise, it was stock.

I ordered a CTO Dual 2 Gig G5 on the day of announcement...
After the delivery date slipped and slipped, I was finally told it may be October before they hit the UK and I would get one!
I cancelled and bought a 15" Ti...
I am so impressed with the Ti and the portability, I'm going to wait for a Rev B G5 Powerbook!!
All in though, this is doing little for Apple's reputation.
Peace,
TPC

Well don't feel bad because it's officially still shipping in August contrary to MacNN's reporting-
Confirmed, Power Mac G5 Dual 2 GHz Models Ship End of August: On Your Mac Life last night, Apple G5 product manager Todd Benjamin stated that the Dual 2-GHz Power Mac G5s are still on track to ship by the end of August.
..When is macnn going to fix the damn quote buttons not working?

I think almost everyone that had a 8/29 ship date on macrumors.com has been bumped to 9/26.
Bad move on apples part, and I bet it shows in the coming months. Bad bad bad...

I just got off the phone with the Apple store. I was told that there are no 2.0 GHz G5s shipping. Both BTO and stock machine delivery dates have been pushed back. They also said to expect the shipping date to be pushed back again even further.

I'm surprised my Dual 2.0 shipping date (listed as on or before 10/16) hasn't changed. I guess we'll see.
This better not end in a "speed dump" like Apple did when it couldn't deliver the original 500MHz PowerMac G4. I wouldn't be all that thrilled with dual 1.8's.

Personally, I think it's kinda silly that Apple is issuing these benchmarks claiming the fastest personal computer in the world for a system they can't deliver and won't deliver until the end of September AT THE EARLIEST. I think AMD is coming out with a 64-bit chip before then (I could be wrong), but even if they don't, there could still be a faster computer out by that time. I think this is overall just a bad move by Apple to have led everyone on for this long. They should've known (at the latest) when they started shipping the other G5 models that the Dual 2Ghz models would not be shipping by the end of the month. Instead, they assured us that they would ship by the end of August as expected. Personally, I'm a PC user and i'm just waiting to make the switch, and this move by Apple doesn't help things.

Called apple today about the delays. I was told that they were due to a "component being backordered" although they could not tell me which component.

I called Apple to complain. They read me the "component delivery delay" issue, too. The rep said that the earliest he thought units would ship is 9/23.
Basically for the effort of my call he credited me the cost of overnight shipping. Clearly I'd pay $57 to have my machine a month sooner (e.g., now instead of end of Sept), but free overnight is better than the proverbial "nothing".

And another thing...
My date is now 9/29. Has anyone else seen the flip from 9/26 to 9/29 (Friday to Monday)?
Yes, I'm obsessed with this right now.

I wonder whether Apple is going to make an "official statement" on the delays, or just continue to dribble bits of conflicting information through its customer reps? My guess is that they don't have the guts to come clean. Didn't the G5 product line manager go on the record, like, yesterday saying that the duals were going to ship today? Where the hell was he getting his information?
Steve's culture of cloak-and-dagger secrecy has reached the point that Apple has lost the capacity to be honest about anything relating to its hardware.

My Power Mac G5 2.0GHz DP CTO has retained its estimated ship date of 09/02/2003 as of when I just checked a few minutes ago. My order was through Apple's hardware discount since I am a registered developer. My credit card has not be charged yet.
Remember too, that the recent blackout halted production at the IBM Fishkill fab. Considering how many wafers get pumped out each day, it's not too surprising that halting the lines for a few days could result in many delays. Delays of an entire month are probably suffering from multiple component shortages, however.

Yes. And Apple denied that the blackout would delay shipping of the G5s.
I'd be less PO'd by the delay if I thought Apple were being candid. They could have stated immediately after the blackout that this could impact shipments, and I think we would all have understood... but they did just the opposite.
What was the G5 product manager doing stating that the Dual 2Ghz G5s were still on track to ship by the end of August just a few days ago?
Why do we find this out the freaking day that the units were scheduled to ship?
Instead, they made a big deal of shipping a few units on their home page last week. Thanks, guys.

Me too.
My dual G5 order registered at Apple on 06/23/2003 at 02:55 PM PST. Shipped date was changed yesterday to 9/26. Now it's 9/29.
I'm typing this on my PB G4 Titanium, which I also ordered right after it came out and had to watch the ship date keep getting pushed back.
I hadn't learned my lesson. I bought a 23" display last week so it would be ready for my new G5. My new cinema display is very pretty sitting on my desk. I'll find out if it works when the G5 finally arrives next month.
Oh, well. As some one pointed out last time this happened to me, "It's just a computer." -- or some such wisdom. I don't really remember. I do remember my anger. It was just about the same as what I feel now.

Mine was and still is On or before 10/07/2003.
I have been hearing from other news sites that most of the orders bumped to 9/29/03 from 8/29/03 went BACK to 8/29/03 after a bit.
I'm also reading that Virginia Tech University bought a huge bunch of them that went to the front of the line and bumped people. So...its really very very strange.
Then I'm also seeing quotes from Apple reps saying something like: "The 9/26 date is a "worst-case scenario to make sure everyone gets it by the ship date".
In any case, this doesn't seem to be universal. A LOT of people seem to still have their ship dates around 8/29 or 9/2 and almost everyone else still has theirs the same.

I think I agree.
Although I don't like the idea of harming Apple's financial position (a weak Apple balance sheet makes a weak company, which then performs weakly until it just dies and we all have to start using Windows 24/7... I don't want that), this would send an appropriate message:
"Your loyal customers are not to be lied to and manipulated. If we wanted that we'd buy from Microsoft."
Everyone who's ordered is going to buy the machines eventually anyway, so Apple will get the sales in the long run.
However, I bet very few do actually cancel! Most will cut Apple the slack - component shortages are not actually its fault after all.
And G5 buyers are like Gollum and the One Ring... "We must have the preccciousss."

I posted this earlier on Ars:
I just got off the phone with Apple sales and was told there were no Duals shipping from the warehouse at the moment because of some unknown problem. I asked how I would go about canceling and the salesman told me that it would be unwise to cancel after waiting so long and that I was in the first batch that would go out. He offered me $75 off and I asked him if he could do better so he put me on hold for a few min. and talked to a supervisor. He came back and told me they could go as high as $125 so I accepted. It's not all that much money on a $3500 order but that's a 512MB stick of RAM I guess (even though you need two ).

I just checked again and my original date of 8/29 that got moved to 9/26, now stands at 9/22. Go figure. At this rate my Sept. calendar in iCal is gonna get a workout after I keep putting in new dates.

doesn't really hurt anything on the financials. They don't recognize any revenue until they actually ship out a box.

Apple's response to my angry letter:
"The demand for the dual processor PowerMac has been overwhelming and our employees are working around the clock to meet demand. Initial units will be sent to education institutions to meet key back to school deadlines. We currently anticipate shipping your new G5 PowerMac in 3-4 weeks.
If for any reason this revised shipping date is not acceptable, please let us know and we will promptly change or cancel your order per your instructions. If we do not hear from you prior to shipment, we will assume the revised date is acceptable and will ship your order. If you decide to cancel your order and it was paid for in advance, you will receive a prompt refund."
So much for Todd Benjamin's (G5 Product Manager) word. He made a statement this week claiming that there would be parody amoung purchasing channels when it comes to G5 distribution. Wow does he have egg on his face. Would love to hear his explanation.

Well, it's not that bad, it could have been worse I'm sure.
But just the feeling of all the anticipation building up that you are getting this brand new G5 on Aug. 29th and then suddenly diminished by a couple sentences, now that makes a LOT of people pissed off.

Did you really mean to say "parody?"
As for the explanation: "The schoolkids need their G5s."
It's not like you're paying more for your G5 than a school is. Oh, wait, you are.

"ThinkSecret is running a story which might explain exactly why the Dual 2ghz G5 machines have been delayed to the customers that ordered them minutes after the keynote was delivered. Apparently, Virginia Tech has plans to build a G5 cluster of 1100 units. If it manages to complete the cluster before the cut-off date, it will score a Top 5 rank in the Linpack Top 500 Supercomputer List. Both Apple and the University are playing mum on the issue, but there's talk of it all over the campus."
If this true, it's kind of disappointing that Apple would put them over the people that ordered the G5 minutes after it was announced, but on the other hand, it could be pretty cool for Apple and get some media attention, plus sell a lot more units. What do you think?

Wow. Insightful comment.
As for the 1100 machine cluster -->
WOW! That is awesome. It's a tad hard to believe - that's a huge amount of space, and a rack solution would be far, far, far and away more efficient. And 4 to 8 GB of RAM per node?! That is going to absolutely rip. Wonder who's going to do job control.
Still, I'd love to see Apple part of a large cluster and start getting press for big computational jobs, especially if they give me access

Let's face it: Apple does this nearly every time a machine using lots of new technology is introduced. Being a geezer, I can remember similar instances back to at least the PowerBook 170.
My suspicion is that when you have lots of previously unordered components, and most of all a top-of-the-line new processor (read,
"the small fraction of early yield that doesn't get rejected or classified as acceptable only at a lower clock speed"), supply problems are inevitable. Make it a dual processor system and you, er, double the problem. (I even recall a delay on the original 1.25 GHz G4's, while the 1.0's shipped on time.)
Once upon a time, there was a compuer company called Digital Euipment Corporation, and its afficionados were always complaining that it never announced a new product until they had it ready to ship.... which made them look bad compared to competitors, who were willing to announce products that had vague ship dates.
For what it's worth, our credit card order with the Apple Federal Store for a 1.8 GHz G5 CTO, placed August 1, has said "on or before September 15" since it was placed.
We also have a an order, placed through a more elaborate purchase requisition system, for a dual 2.0, but it was delayed in house so long that I doubt we'll have the sucker by Thanksgiving.
Now let us all adopt a Zen-like stoicism, and try not to grimace when we hear about some hokie polytechnic in Blacksburg VA getting 1100 of our lusted-after hardware before any of us do.... .Ooooh, that hurts.

I would expect that Apple will bump your date back at approximately 2:00AM on the morning of 10/2. That would be consistent with what they did to the people with 8/29 ship dates.

Wise counsel. This is why I didn't preorder, nor will I ever preorder from Apple. They have an absolutely abysmal record with delays. The delay itself is bad enough. The devaluation of the computer in the 3-4 months it takes to ship makes it even worse. They're charging full price for a computer that by all rights should be knocked down $500 by the time it's released. When I can actually find it in stock somewhere, that is the time I will look at the pricetag and judge whether it is worth it.

We ordered a product with full knowledge that it may or may not ship on time.
Apple is not the only company that pre-announces products. Please stop claiming it is, such claims are foolish. If they hadn't announced the G5 until it could ship, we'd have a forum filled with people who are upset that they just bought a dual 1.42 G4, and they would've preferred to wait 3 months and get a G5.
Regarding the priority placed on educational orders... would you prefer that students and teachers be forced to cancel their Apple orders and purchase Dells? Most of us can wait. Most of us already have one or more G4s. We'll live.
This sort of situation is unfortunate, but it's also the reality of business. Sometimes you meet your deadlines, and sometimes you realize that you have no choice but to miss some of your deadlines and simply try to minimize the amount of inconvenience which your customers experience.
Nobody at Apple is happy that they had to push back the ship dates, but it's reality.

Bye bye.
Alas poor Brian, in only 4 posts we seem to have gotten to know you so well. Enjoy the world of Dell/Wintel, it's not like we give a sh*t about you or know if you're even telling the truth. Don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out.
