Oh, well.

I should have included - mine is a dual-2G machine ordered two hours after keynote, from the Apple Store federal employee online page. Est. ship was 8/29 until last night, presently 9/29.
CTO changes were 9800, single 250GB, combo drive, and Bluetooth.

I got the same letter as above except mine says 10-15 days. I ordered a CTO dual 2.0, 9800 and Bluetooth. Apple was nice enough to give me $125 off for my angst but I'm still a little ticked off

How do you guys feel about education customers being given priority over you?
You know, the ones paying less than you...

They might also be the ones giving the most demand at the moment.

Whatever.

The demand for the dual processor PowerMac has been overwhelming and our
employees are working around the clock to meet demand.
There is an additional reason for the huge demand Virginia Tech University's Power Mac G5 cluster
and Apple has bumped this order to the front of the line, in front of first-day orders.
Looks like they 'block bought' the full production run for a while.

Sorry but no one can tell for sure. I guess you'll just have to wait until 9/2 comes.

These delays are ridiculous. On the day of the announcement, there should be a supply of systems ready to be shipped in all configurations.
No other computer company makes customers wait several months for their computers to arrive. Apple might as well have delayed announcing the G5 until September.

Doesn't work like that. Apple is the rock star/movie idol of the IT world - its new stuff is anticipated by its fans as much as a new album or movie.
Having shipments G5 ready to go would simply mean not announcing until around now. Then it would have lost:
- all the mindshare and bragging rights to having the first 64-bit personal computer.
- back-to-school orders
- months of built up excitement amongst the fanbase
- WWDC developers' loyalty who need to see something big to reaffirm their faith in the platform
- the opportunity for app makers to tweak their code ready for quick updates

'Cause waiting for the latest DELL would be so exciting...
Anyway, Microsoft - the OS supplier to virtually all computer companies - has much longer "vapor times" - what is Longhorn's expected date now? 2005? The hype's already started.
And the Tablet PC was hyped years before it was released.
It's the industry. Apple and everyone else announces when they feel is right to get the most impact.

I have a new monitor and 1 gig of memory, but no
computer to hook the monitor to nor to put the
memory in...
Apple told me that my 1.6 would take 7 to 10 more
business days to ship to me due to product restraints
(Whatever that means!? Although,it probably has to do
something with the fact that I ordered a 160gig hard
instead of the stock 80gig hard drive.)
I heard that the dualies shipping dates were pushed
back, but what about single processor folks. Am I the
only one...
Ordered 1.6 on 7/3/03
Due to ship 8/29 then 9/15

1. Well since you brought up DELL, you're certainly not going to be waiting 2+ months for a system to arrive at your doorstep. Several weeks at most.
2. We're not talking about OS software, we're talking HARDWARE. Furthermore, you don't exactly order Longhorn several years before it's to be released, same applies for Tablet PC.
I dont' know why you immediately thought this was an Apple vs. Wintel debate, but if you look at the industry as a "whole" which includes non-Wintel stuff like Sun and IBM, companies will get their stuff out the door quick to meet customer demand and to keep them happy; otherwise they get something else. Pre-orders are a risky business IMHO.
RESOLVED, I think most of us can agree that people would rather want to get their stuff shortly after a product is announced as opposed to waiting several months to get it.
Now if someone ordered something like a Cray, yes the time delay is understandable since it's a custom job and you don't necessarily have an inventory of Cray's sitting in a warehouse.

What is the difference between annoucing the computer a couple months in advance of the ship date, as opposed to surprising people with an shipping machines the day they are introduced?
Apple more or less gave you advance notice of a product launch. What's wrong with that? I'd rather know what's in the pipeline, as opposed to having to wait all Summer to find out what Apple's next move was.
So what's the difference people? How did Apple telling you in advance they were going to ship G5's hurt you? You didn't have to order you know, you could have waited. You still can in some cases go buy at retail and cancel your online orders.
People waiting for dualies, if you are hardcore gotta have my machine yesterday - I'd advise you to get on a freaking list at every retail location within your reach and call them regularly (esp. every Monday). There's a good chance a dualie will come available for you at retail before your online order arrives. You can go pick up the dualie and cancel the online order and not clutter up the forums with you sob stories.

FWIW, Apple Sweden has started to send out the delay letter to its customers. I just received mine, with the 3-4 week ETA period.

Well, I didn't get much information on calling Apple today, but thought I should post it nonetheless. My (fed gov) order was placed through the Apple Store at noon of the Keynote, my 8/29 date was slipped to 9/29, CTO options were 512MB, single 250GB, 9800, Bluetooth, and combo drive.
Responses from the customer service agent:
- Doesn't know why the 8/29 slippage was announced so late, or any details on the cause.
- Can't confirm that the 9/29 date will be met, though they "have every expectation".
- Can't explain why some orders placed after mine received 2-3 week delays instead of 3-4. He suggested it might be other configuration issues, but could not identify which component(s) could be causing this. At this point he offered to transfer me to "customer satisfaction", when I asked if THEY could answer the question he said "No".
- Can't explain why building the exact same machine on the AppleStore gov site this morning shows an estimated shipping delay of 10-15 days (2-3 weeks, still in advance of 9/29).
However, he was very emphatic that orders were being processed in sequence, and that placing a new order and cancelling the existing one would result in further delays.
- Couldn't offer any guarantee or information that my order might ship 9/29, only to have Jobs announce in October that Panther was being released and retro-fitted to machines purchased 10/1 or later. (I didn't expect any joy on this, but it's my primary concern right now.)
(shrug) I did get a shipping upgrade from 2nd day to overnight. I suspect that I may be really screwed - having ordered early, to receive my machine among the LAST of the initial orders, and to have it ship one day early of qualifying for a Panther installation. Anyway, that's the latest from Apple, maybe it'll save someone else a call.
