Went to the Cambridgeside Galleria today to take a gander at the new G5s. The one I got to try was a 1.6 GHz machine with 768 MB of RAM; apparently they had the 1.8 GHz model too. My observations:

- Pictures don't do the thing justice. It's quite striking in person.
- As others have noted, the CD eject mechanism is somewhat rough sounding. The cover looks like it could cut your finger off.
- Application launch times were the most impressive I've ever seen, on a Mac or PC. Most things launched within one dock bounce, two max.
- Window resizing in most apps felt faster than my G4/867 with GeForce 4Ti, but not incredibly so. Window resizing in iPhoto still bites.
- Window opening and closing was very fast.
- iMovie was much more fluid than on my current machine. A big improvement.
- All Office apps ran very, very smoothly. My G4 feels dog slow in comparison, and I used to think it was pretty good.

All in all, a pretty nice entry-level machine. Not earth shattering, but I think it will go a long way to close the Mac/PC performance gap.

With things like video and audio, there is no performance gap.

We have a 1.8 Ghz PC at work w/3 SCSI drives for video, 1 GB RAM and it blows compared to my dual Ghz Mac... it blows compared to the 350 G4 I had before that! You can hardly run After Affects and Media Cleaner at the same time without it stalling out or crashing.

The Mac rules. The G5 will maybe finally make that point to the public.

Thanks for the test drive info, all very interesting to read!

Let me add one thing -- the new keyboard and mouse look like CRAP! :/ How Apple could bundle those ugly peripherals with such a fascinating case design is beyond me.

When the day comes that I upgrade to a G5, I'll be keeping my Quicksilver's keyboard and my scrolling Logitech mouse.

Probably. But it's an enormous pile of "design dissonance" (to coin a phrase) to bundle a very striking (and pricey) computer with cheapster mice and keyboards.

? I used to run After Effects in a Dual PII-266 several years ago with several active apps running at the same time while AE rendered very fast in the background. So if your 1.8Ghz PC can't handle what a G4-350 can then there's something wrong with you or your configuration.

Stopped in at MicroCenter on Saturday to drop my iBook off for a repair, saw they had a 1.6G5, so I gave it a run through. Machine only had 256mb of RAM, not sure why. Launched several apps, just some basic playing around, and honestly it felt not a bit faster than my 1.25 G4 Single at home. I'm not saying they're equal. Just telling you what I saw: I'm happy with what I've got.
