I just exported some divx files to 'dv steam' format on my athlon 2000 PC using Quicktime 6 and it took a very long time. About 15 minutes of video would take just under an hour to convert.

I figured the difference in megahertz would mean the PC would be much faster than my mac which only runs at 733. Lo and behold, doing the same clip on the mac takes around 5-10 minutes!

I don't care how well the PC runs games, I'm never using it for practical purposes again
LC 16Mhz • LC 475 25Mhz • Centris 650 25Mhz • Performa 6200/75Mhz • G3 266Mhz • Snow iMac DVSE 500Mhz
G4 QS 733Mhz • 17" Powerbook 1.33Ghz • 15" MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.16Ghz • Mac Pro 8-Core 3.0 Ghz

Not sure about it, but I remember to have read somewhere that quicktime for windows blows... This might be the cause for the slow exporting on the athlon.

I think this is Apple's way of getting back at Microsoft for making windows media player so crappy for the mac.

Once again, optimizing for the platform helps one machine appear slower or faster than another.

QuickTime for Windows does indeed blow. It takes forever to launch (even on the newest computers), a long time to load files, and it doesn't properly overlay video on mirror monitors. There are many better encoding programs on the PC than QuickTime. I know this because both my P4 2.4 and my AMD2600+ completely own my mac at encoding. For some reason, I still use my mac more than either PC. Or both combined.

P.S. Anyone want to buy a PC? College student, will sell computers for $$ (or beer).

Workflow vs. raw speed.

PC always wins raw speed - but workflow is what counts.

Saving 20% of a human's time is way more important than a CPU that does things 20% faster (or more).

We are the bottleneck these days.

Sorry, but my Athlon 2500+ kicks the crap out of my previous 733mhz, and actually gives the Dual 1.25 MP a run for its money on speed alone in apps like photoshop and in de or encoding divx streams, using the right apps.

Of course, it's ugly as crap and Winblows makes me not want to do any work, but there's no way it's slower than a 733Mhz.

Yeah... as much of a Mac nut as I am I would have to agree with the above. For one of the same reason many games on the Mac pale in comparison to the PC (poor ports), I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that the opposite is true and to find Apple software sucks on the PC platform too!

On a bigger note... who cares how the Mac compares to the PC? If we are happy with the Mac...good enough! If PC are happy with the PC... good enough!

Me, I'm happy with my beautiful, though admitted slower (iBook and iMac) Macs!

Huh? Is it 5 minutes or 10 minutes or are you making this up?

I have to mirror one of the posts above...

My PC (AXP@2.3GHz) is faster than any Mac I've ever owned, but I can get work done faster on the Mac.

Can't wait for my Dual 2.0 though

Yeah, and isn't that what it comes down too. The new G5 architecture will hopefully allow us to have bragging rights again (though...why brag?), but it is simply fact that due to several factors Apple fell behind. this seems to irritate people to no end, but is simple fact.

I run a web design busines on an iBook! It is a great little machine, with specs that I am borderline happy with. I have the money in the bank for a top end new powerbook, but am patiently waiting for something more. If I buy in two months, or next year, I am waiting to see what comes. During this time, however, my partners PC is running laps around my 900mhz iBook. Does this bug me? Nope. Why? I'm happy with the machine and don't really care that the PC is better.

Having said that.... when the G5 is widespread and kickin' the PC worlds butt I will definitely be immature and rub it in my partners face a bit!
