Hey there
Kinda new here, so I was wondering if any one knew anything about this..
I just bought a G5 1.8 and I have an iMac 800 TFT. With that iMac I got those super cool speakers, those translucent sphere like beauties...
My question is this, can I use them on my new G5 system???
Any ideas, reasons why you can or cannot...
Thanks...
PS. My order was : G5 1.8 with 1 GB ram, iSight, Airport and JBL speakers. But the speakers I don't need if I can use the round speakers from my iMac...

I don't think you can use them. The Apple Pro Speakers you speak of have a special kind of connector which only works with certain Macs, and my believe is that the G5 does not have it.

He's correct, the Apple Pro Speakers won't work on the new G5's. They only work on Macs with a "digital audio out" such as the iMac and all G4's since the "Digital Audio" PowerMacs.

Sooo, to sum things up. The G5 I originally planned to buy can't use my SCSI and Ethernet PCI cards (wrong voltage), won't run VPC, can't connect to my Apple Pro speakers...

The growing pains of a new generation.
What about that scanner you couldn't use with X? Or that printer that wouldn't print? Just relax and go with the flow.

Yeah. I was a bit saddened in this one, as I love my pro speaker/isub config and if I ever upgrade to a g5 I'll have to get the less... pretty... soundsticks.
But I'm probably going to have to do that with my pc anyway. Oh well
Your other option is to find some g4 cube speakers on ebay. They use USB and if you're using an apple display should be able to get full volume.

I just replaced my printer and scanner two years ago. I am just not doing this again that soon... Just cancelled my order.

Proprietary connection standards = expensive workarounds or premature obsolescence.
I would stick to speakers with conventional 1/8" analog stereo microjacks. These will be compatible with anything for some time to come.

{snip, snip, glue}
I just replaced my printer and scanner two years ago. I am just not doing this again that soon... Just cancelled my order.
1. ebay the scsi card and buy a newer one.
2. What's the ethernet card for? The G5 has ethernet built in. (But, you probably know that )
3. Who cares about VPC. (And it's probably just the current version that won't run.)
4. If your printer is USB or Ethernet, it will still work.
5. If your scanner is USB, Firewire or scsi it will still work. (You'll need to update that scsi card though.)
So, if you cancelled a G5 (even though you want/need one) because of 1 & 2 I can sort of see your point, but how much extra would the new scsi and ethernet cards be? Is the ethernet card that crucial?
If you cancelled because of 3. You could probably buy a second hand PC for what VPC costs. And it would probably be faster.
If you answered 'no' to 4 & 5, I can see your point. But, if you bought a serial printer 2 years ago, it was very short sighted of you
If you answered 'yes' to 4 & 5 and still cancelled the order, you're a misinformed bonehead. (relax, I'm joking.)

Ethernet cards are pretty much free nowadays right?
Seriously, if you really need dual nic, a 10 buck card should work great.
SCSI? That's a bummer. You might look into whether a larger capacity serial ata would work for holding the old data. Or... with a fast LAN, remote storage may be feasible.
Apple 'pro' speaker jack? Hearing that name's had me chuckling since the day it was introduced.

That's what I am doing. I have my old Altec-Lansing speakers, and with my KVM switch, I can share my speakers along with my monitor and keyboard.
Another option for you audiophiles: with the G5, you can hook the digital audio out into a Dolby Digital 5.1 Receiver (about $150 minimum for a low-end name-brand like Panasonic), then use some real speakers (You can get 5 Sony speakers+ a subwoofer for about $150). The net result will sound a LOT better than a 2.1 computer speaker set.

those speakers sound terrible, imo. but, i thought i remembered a product that will let you take any 1/8th mini output and it will conveert it to apples powered jack. im not sure who makes it, but im sure a simple google search will give you the results you need.

Griffin Technology's PowerMate. But at $99, it would be cheaper just to buy a new set of conventional speakers.
I'm betting that Apple will come out with a new speaker design for use with the G5's outputs. Just a guess, though.

All valid points. But buying an old PC and new PCI cards would cost about as much as buying a 1.4 GHz DP upgrade for my Quicksilver 933. (Disregarding the fact that I simply don't want to buy a PC for something I have to do once a week – connect to the intranet of my company.)
Essentially I have two options: either sell my Powermac and Powerbook and get a PC notebook and a G5/1.6. Or upgrade the G4 to something not that much slower than the G5. Since the latter solution is *much* cheaper, there can only be one decision...

I think the Pro Speakers actually sound decent for their size but they distort easily when the volume is high. They are better than most speakers bundled with new PCs. That said, don't bother spending money on an adapter, just buy new speakers. There are many good choices out there.
