Hello:

Got a bit of a head scratcher here. I can no longer get my 5 gig iPod to synch with my 17 inch iMac (10.2). The iPod will charge, however, so there is some sort of interaction going on.

Here's my set up on the iMac: Both firewire ports are in use, and are attached to a Motu 828 soundcard and an EZQuest firewire drive. I normally chain the iPod to the EZQuest's extra firewire port.

This has not been a trouble-free situation at any point - if the computer slept, once it woke something in EZquest/iPod link would go wrong and give me the beach ball. I'd have to unplug and then plub back in the iPod and then things would go fine. I could live with this, since the problem was intermittent.

But recently the computer stopped recognizing the iPod, at least as a hard drive and something that it could synch with. I've plugged the iPod in directly with differently cables and while it will still charge, it won't show up on the desktop or in iTunes. The system profiler sees it as being there when it's plugged in directly, but not when it's chained the EZQuest.

A puzzler. Any thoughts? Did I break my iPod?

You probably have a broken solder joint in the FW connection within the iPod. Easy to fix if you know how to open it and solder. Impossible if you don't.

Charging just means the two wires for charging are not broken. No data/syncing/doesn't show up means one or more of the data wires are broken.

Here's an old link from MacNN. Unfortunately, the web page and pics no longer load.
