I believe the codename for the design is "Hero."

.. At least that's what the gallery (http://www.apple.com/powermac/design.html) suggests.

Where do you see this on the page?

Isn't there a piece of software that someone makes that has all of this info on every mac ever made?

Hero is actually a nickname for a 3/4 view I'm pretty sure.

That is.. when it's looking 'up' at the product.. and 3/4.. that would be the hero view

Anyway at one point it was rumored the codename for one of the designs was 'awakening' because if the PC users didn't wake up to this they never would..

The processor nickname is neo inside apple.. yet again, same idea... referencing to the 'pc sheep' as people within the matrix.

"Codenames: Of interest, the new PowerMacs' "model property" is PowerMac7,2 and it appears to have carried a codename of "Omega". This Tech Overview PDF still carries the name (Omega) in the Document Summary, and one user notes that Apple Store eNews from 6/23 still had this name in one their promotional materials:" [source: http://www.baseboard.net/forums/showthread/t-8827.html ]

Food for thought I guess

The G5's codename is "Omega". Kind of odd though as it seems like more of a beginning to me rather than an end.

It's the end of the 32-bit era.

Hero, Omega, Neo... How about an honest answer, like "I don't know"?

Honestly, Hero is most likely. But who knows?

That would be GPUL then.

Doing a search on google brings up the name 'Omega' as the codename quit often, but some 6 months ago it went by the name 'Q37'.

This site claims to list all codenames for Apple products, btw:

OMEGA is correct - it can stand for both the beginning and the end. Scary huh.

From a theological point of view, God in His infinite perfection can be considered the alpha and omega. The end of something also signifies the beginning of something else.

Omega is the final letter of the Greek alphabet.

That the end of something also signifies the beginning of something else may have some philosophical resonance for you, but it's a real stretch to say that Omega literally means both beginning and end. Is the end of the alphabet the beginning of another alphabet? Nah, I didn't think so.

God is said to be the Alpha (beginning) *and* Omega (end). If the letter Omega implied both beginning and end, God would only need to be referred to as the Omega.

When you try to make a word do a lot of work like that, do you pay it extra?

But the real question for me is... why would Apple call these machines Omega internally... rather than Ogiga?

I'm not pretending to be a priest or anything but am just relaying what I was once told by one in a sermon. I'm not trying to make the word do more than it needs to or pull anything outa my butt. When you get to the end of the alphabet you don't exactly discard it and never go through it again - you can start right over again. You are correct in that God is refered to as the Alpha and Omega but I didn't really want to turn the whole thing into a big theological discusion. The end of a series often signifies the begining of another. The codename is a codename and may have no real meaning other than just being a codename. Last time I checked OSX doesn't have four legs, fur and a tail but that doesn't stop Apple from calling it a cat.

If you look at a capital omega, you will see that it looks like someone walking full circle. You have reached the end, but in one way, you have also reached the beginning (because you're almost back at the beginning of your walk). Something like that, anyway.

The meaning of a word isn't generally a matter of personal opinion. If there's doubt, you can always check out a dictionary.

I went to dictionary.com and found several entries defining Omega, like this one:
---
o·me·ga __ (_P_)__Pronunciation Key__(-mg, -mg, -m-) n.
1 The 24th letter of the Greek alphabet. See table at alphabet.

2 The end.

3 See omega baryon.

4 See omega meson.
---

None of the definitions mentioned "the beginning" or "a beginning" as a possible meaning.
