I'm trying to add a disk partition so that I can install YDL on my DP 1 gig G4 but it won't let me. I select the disk and the window under volume scheme is gray with a small lock in the bottom (not the admin lock, that's set to let me change things) and all my options are blanked out. Anybosy know what I'm doing wrong?
If you listen to a UNIX shell do you
hear the C?

A) are you booting from the install cd? you can't have the disk you are attempting to alter mounted...

and
B) do you have free space in which to create another partition?

I've got 50gigs free and was going to make a 7 gig partition so it's not a matter of room.

I had disk utility open and was trying to make a partition from there, I haven't done this before so don't really know what I'm doing and my book doesn't help much.

If I boot from the YDL install disks will I then be able to make a partition and so on? Also, will I lose the data on the part of the disk that I'm using now/OS X? I keep getting warnings about data being lost on the target disk.

The partitioning process COMPLETELY ERASES THE ENTIRE DISK you are partitioning. In other words you cannot just create a partition out of a chunk of an already-in-use disk. So you need to move or back up ALL your files that cannot be reinstalled before partitioning that disk. Generally folks partition their 2nd, 3rd, 4th non-system disks to set aside chunks of the disks for projects or special applications.

Is that 50G free as in "unallocated to any partition", or is it free as in "part of an existing partition"? If it's the latter, CharD is right on the money. If it's the former, you MIGHT be able to get away with just declaring the space as a new partition.

But I expect it's the former.
Is this a good place for an argument?
