I have an iMac SE (I believe) with a Slot Loading CD-ROM which seems to be dead. It does not accept any CDs and if it does it keeps them inside it's belly and freezes the OS (9.2.2). We desire to replace this drive with a CD-RW or CD-ROM and would like to know if any old fashion IDE/ATA drive will work or there is a specific one needed? Please let me know when you all can.

If you're talking about the iMac DV SE (graphite colour), then it had a slot loading DVD-ROM drive. Regular IDE drives are full size desktop drives, where the iMac uses a laptop style drive.

I don't think that particular iMac variant uses laptop drives - it's standard CD/DVD-drives, albeit slot-loading. Check any PC parts supplier to see if they have any slot-loading Ultra ATA drives. You can get a slot-loading Combo drive, if you feel like it. Replacing it is a bit tricky, but not impossible.

I thought all iMacs used notebook drives until the G4. If you know it's bad, open it up and find out. If it looks like a regular 5.25" drive, get a new one and pop it in, if not, check out xlr8yourmac.com for notebook alternatives.

All CRT iMacs use laptop optical drives, be they tray- or slot-loading. A standard desktop optical drive will not fit inside, nor will the connector fit. (All iMacs use standard desktop hard drives.)
You mention that inserting a disc causes the iMac to freeze... are you sure it's not a software problem? See if you can boot from a CD -- if your system software is corrupted, it could just be freezing up when it tries to load the code to read a CD, and if that's the case, then you just need to reinstall the OS.
