The title is self explanatory.

I'm starting to see 1gig mem chips for iMacs and Powerbooks but not yet for the G4.
I'm wondering whether the use of more than 2 gigs is a software or hardware limitation and if Panther will change that.

Thanks in advance.

I think the last G4 MDD FW800 Powermacs (not the FW400 ones they are selling now) can support up to 3-4GB if you use 1GB dimms, but these DIMMs are so new, it's too early to tell.

Apparently the 1GHz iMac can support 2GB as can the 12" powerbook (latest model only) and maybe even the 17" (again, only the 1GHz model).

As for Panther's limitation, it's anyone's guess, but I would not be surprised if there is a 2GB limit per app, but at the same time not surprised if the limit is 4GB.

Why do you ask? Do you have a couple grand to burn for RAM?

lol a couple of grand? I'm seeing from $286 to $315 for a 1GB 133 dimms.I'm will be ordering an upgrade for my G4 450mhz, either a Giga or Powerlogix 1.4 and want to max out the ram beyond 2GB if possible.
I remember OS 9's limit was 1.5GB.Hopefully someone is trying 3 or 4 GB in a G4 with 10.3 beta and will post soon.

A G4 with a 1.4ghz cpu and 3 or 4GB ram will suit me just fine for at least 8 months to a year until G5 rev2 ships with wireless mouse/keyboard and revised lcds starting at single 2.5 ghz on the low end.

I won't be satisfied with a single G5 1.6 for too long...wish Apple had released a dual 1.6,they would have my $ right now.

So I wait.

You cannot put more than 2GB in your 450, no matter what upgrade processor you put in it. You cannot put DIMMS bigger than 512MB in your Sawtooth either. Panther will not help you in this case. It is a hardware limitation.

If you get a MDD machine, then everything I said still applies with the answer being a definite "maybe".
