Ever since I bought my Cube it has emitted a not particularly load, but high pitched (and thus annoying) electrical moan or groan, constantly when it's switched on, almost as if it has a tiny high speed fan spinning in it (which it doesn't, just a passively cooled Geforce 2MX).
I've always thought it was the HD, but it is on permanently when the machine is switched on, and never changes volume pitch or tone, so before I buy a silent HD for my Cube (to shut it up and stop it Wining at me!) can anyone tell me if they've had a similar problem, or what's up?

It probably is the HD. Set it to sleep the HD when possible (energy saver control panel) and see if it doesn't stop.

I've got the "sleep the HD option" checked but the bloody thing doesn't stop whining at me!
Maybe I need to breast feed it?

my imac was the same way....whine, whine, whine.....it's the hard drive. unless, it's a capacitor or something like that. they can emit a "noise" if they are going bad i believe

I don't know what's whining more, his Cube or the people who pre-ordered a Dual G5 and want Panther for free.

It's the hard drive... you must have an old maxtor drive in there.. or something.

I dunno, but there are NOISY drives out there, go grab a $60-80 hard drive at best-buy or something, preferably a seagate drive, slip it in, and your noise problems will be solved.

WD is good too, I hear.

It could also be the fan on the Radeon card.
Is this a good place for an argument?

My Cube dos have a Maxtor drive so that could be the problem, but the noise does'nt sound like that of a HD at all, although it does make an electrical whining much like that of a capacitor that is about to blow (or so I imagine).
It's certianly not the fan on the Radeon card as my Cube does not have a Radeon but a passsively cooled (i.e. no Fan) Geforce 2MX in it (as stated in my first post).
Thanx for the reply s guy's, I guess I'll have to buy a new HD to find the answer to this question.

How many different ways are you going to spell whining?
*justin

Isn't logic swell? It gives answers without really answering anything!

my cube with an upgraded seagate barracuda IV 80gig drive squeels like a pig when accessing the drive. there's a .exe utility you can use from seagate that supposedly fixes it, but i can't find it anymore...anyway, it's the only sound coming from the system since it's otherwise silent as a church mouse. gets kind of annoying though huh? at least your not going crazy, there are others out thee like you

Maybe he is not trying to spell. Perhaps he is simply winging it.
I, ASIMO.
