I've got a Quicksilver 733 MHz model which I stripped down to just the case, power supply, and logic board. I am buying a new video card, hard drive, RAM, and CD-RW drive.

Now I need a nice processor. I was going to go with the Dual 1 GHz for $599, but that seems a bit steep for what it offers. I found a single 1.45 GHz G4 for $589, with 2 MB of L3 cache.

BTW, I have not used this machine in a while, I have been using a 1 GHz PowerBook G4, so I need a decent speed upgrade.

Also, do upgrades come with the processor board screws? Thanks!

The "best" is a matter of definition!
The best performance is from the fastest dual you can get 2. 1.2 GHz at 790 dollars...
The most bang for the bucks is the 390 dollar GigaDesign 1.0 G4 tested at 1.2 GHz* For 2/3 of the price of the 1.45 GHz upgrade you mention it will give you more than 80% of the CPU performance so I do not think you will be able to see any difference.

How would I get the 1 GHz chip for $389 to operate at 1.25 GHz? If so I might go this route.

Well after some more research it appears I would have to manually overclock it?

Hey CheesePuff, I will be upgrading my 867QS as soon as I have the extra money, I am also looking to buy the new 15" powerbook when it becomes available. I have been considering the dual 1Ghz for $599 from PowerLogix. I usally run many apps at once and feel the dualies is the way to go for me. I considered the dual 1.2, but at almost $200 more it's just not worth it to me, maybe if if were $699 I would get it, maybe. I think dual 1Ghz will fill that gap between now and a new G5 somewhere down the line. I have future plans for my QS, I would like to turn it into a server, so I plan on holding on to it.
