After a few weeks of debating what I was going to do, yesterday I ordered a 2GHz G5 tower. I signed up for the student developer program and decided to make use of my one-time student discount. I've sold my dual 867 (my desktop system for a little over a year) and cinema display configuration for $2200 in order to cover the purchasing costs.

I'll be using the family dell PC (not too bad specs wise, Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 120gb hd) for a while until this behemoth arrives.
I was going to get a 1.8GHz unit, but I know that over the long term, I'll be happier with the dual 2G. I was really going to just 'settle' with the 1.8 because I wouldn't have to wait as long. A friend of mine who puts PCs together really settled it for me. He's like if I were into Macs, that's the machine I would want to have. That and a reference to seeing the machine on ebay in a few months (where I've sold my previous 4 macs [ibook 500, ibook 800, g4/400, g4/867) in the last 2 years or so)Hopefully have a little less buyer's remorse too..
Who knows, at this rate maybe this machine will ship with Panther...

I've used a 1.6GHz G5 at a comp-usa and in the apple store. It was nice, but definitely not blowing performance-wise. 256mb of ram no doubt had something to do with that.
Anyway, I'm excited though not to the point where I'm obsessed with when it's going to arrive..

You could say that I want to be pleasantly surprised.
