I keep hearing that panther will give the G5 a huge speed boost..

my question, whose to say that it will not give my dual 1.4 the same speed boost?

this becomes important to alot due to the recently released benchmarks from macworld...I keep hearing how panther speeds up ALL older macs

I know this doesn't answer your question but as apps are recompiled and optimized for the G5 we will see better performance because the apps will begin to actually take advantage of the characteristics of the G5 thanks to Panther.

In other words, I believe that Panther will increase performance on a G4 but the increase in performance won't be as dramatic on the G4 as it will be on a G5 because Panther is going to let developers optimize applications for the G5.

Reports so far indicate that Panther will be an across-the-board performance boost, on par with the 10.1.x -> 10.2 upgrade.

that is my perception as well, I just keep seeing all these people saying "oh the g5 will be sooo much faster with panther on it"

especiallt when making excuses on why the g4's can keep up

videian, it's pretty clear that the G5 is going to pull ahead of the G4. I mean, how could it not? And why wouldn't we want it to?

I think the point is that if you're happy with the speed of your G4 duallie, you'll be happier when you're set up with your G4 duallie running Panther. And, eventually, you'll be thrilled all over again when you upgrade to a G5 duallie running Panther's successor.
