hey guys,

i got a strange problem here. i bought one of these to replace my main HD in my sawtooth 450. my present configuration:

onboard IDE: 45GB master, 60GB slave
ATA RAID PCI card: 2-80GB drives, striped
firewire: bridgeboard mounted on 45GB, connected to internal fw port

so, my plan was to set the 120 as slave, replace the 60 with it, format, partition, then use CCC to clone my current system to my new HD.

i replaced the 60 with the 120 (set to slave), booted up. got the gray apple, and then a circle with a line through it, and then kernal panic. that didn't work.
i disconnected my RAID, set the card to normal mode, connected the 120 (set as master) to the ATA PCI card. i booted up fine, but can't see the drive, not even the "you have an inserted a disk OS X can't read".
i slapped the firewire bridgeboard on the 120 (set as master), connected it to the fw port, booted up fine, X can't see the fw bridgeboard.
i then put the 120 (set as master) in an external fw case, connected, booted up fine, X can't see the drive. i left the cover off the case, and the drive spun up fine.

now, truly frustrated, i disconnected all drives, set the 120 as master on the onboard IDE. booted from OS X CD, opened disk utility. the only disk that shows up is the CD.

so, is my brand new drive DOA? it spins up, but nothing i do will make it show up. the only idea i have left is to take the drive to my friend's house, and stick it in his Dell to see if he can see the drive and format it in XP.

can anyone give me some ideas to try out on how to get this drive formatted?

i hope it's not DOA. buying something brand new, and having it not work sucks.

thanks in advance,

tr

It sounds like everything you did was ok, except you don't say how the new drive should "show up".

Installed as a slave on the IDE, it should appear in the disk utility for you to partition then erase.

Grey screens and Circles with lines means the computer can't find a valid OS to boot to or something worse.

Are you 100% certain you had it set to slave when you replaced the 60GB drive with it? All connections correct?

I guess if you can get your system back to normal, try the drive in a PC to verify it works.

Have you tried to jumper the offending drives to 'cable select' instead of master/slave?

I've had to do that on several occasions - in peecee land.

yeah, in all cases, disk utility sees nothing.

when i replaced the 60 GB with it, i tried it with master slave, and got kernel panic. then went to cable select: also kernel panic.

system works great when i stick the 60GB back as slave. i boot up, and everything is fine. it perplexed me that just replacing the 60 GB with a new drive, the computer couldn't find the OS, and then kernel panic set in. and this was the FIRST EVER kernel panic i've had using OS X (never saw anything like that, even during the OS X PB days).

i'm gonna try the cable select thing again, and if that doesn't work, it's off to try it in a PC.

I don't think the sawtooths support cable select. Only Master/slave.

Did you try to remove all other devices (except CD-ROM) and put the 120GB as master on the maini IDE?

Make sure you have the new drive on the LAST connector of the IDE.

okay, tried CS: can't find OS, then kernel panic

right now i'm at work, and tried it in our XP box.

-put drive as slave to main HD: computer would not boot up ("no valid boot disk" error), just like in OS X

-put drive on IDE PCI card: no disks detected on bus

-put drive in external FW case: XP can't see it

i mean, i'll keep playing with it (my last bet is to try it on my friends Dell), but it looks like this thing is DOA. dammmit!

i didn't try doing cable select on XP, but i'm guessing it's not going to work; this drive seems to kill any IDE bus that it's connected to.

i guess it's time to get an RMA, and then wait 10 days or more to get a new drive, to replace one i just got yesterday.
