Make sure you're using it on a surface without any red areas. I tried using an optical mouse on a red mouse pad once and it was horrible!

I'm not sure what the best mousing surface is for red optical mice but I know it works fine on my faux-woodgrain desktop with no mouse pad.

I have the answer.. It doesn't like uneven or light colored mouse pads because it bounces the light back. I'm using it on a dark mouse pad now and it works.. Funny. !

nothing to do with the colour.... it has to do with how reflective the surface is, less reflective the better.

The mice also do not like repeating patterns on the surface. It can confuse the mouse and make it jumpy.

Mousepad tip:

Sheet of copier paper works better then any mousepad, it's cheap, looks good, can be customized, and replacable in seconds.

All you need is a small piece of tape on each corner, they last about a week or two depending on the user.

best of all you can write notes on theM XD

Personally, I'm surprised that it is Mac OS 9 bootable.

it probably runs 9 in X, not as a start up OS.

Some advice:

Pick up a Logitech scroll 2 buttonmouse (also infra red) at Staples or Walmart for under 20 bucks.

once you use a mouse with a scroll wheel you'll never use a single button mouse again.
