So i notice that all the discussion is either about the Dualie 2 or should you buy a 1.8 over a dual 1.25. Well I picked up a 1.6 on Friday and I am very happy. I was worried about the upgrade path (my assumption is a diffrent mb because of PCI) but this thing rocks. I currently have a PB12" G4 867 and the speed is night and day, as you would expect. My question is since I dont even see a mention of th e1.6 did i meake a massiv mistake. Do you all know something I dont knwo? other then the PCI slots?

the only thing that matter is that you're happy with it. Does it do everything you want it to do, and does it do that fast enough?? If yes, the other options don't matter anymore.
I currently still on a Cube 500 - and perfectly happy with it. And yes, I use it professionally for design and audio stuff.

I'm considering buying whatever the lowest priced G5 for Christmas. If it's the 1.6 as is, it'll do the trick. The only other thing you missed is max memory but 4GB of memory max will be more than sufficient for the 4+ years I expect the system to last me. My only reason to wait at this point is to have it ship with Panther, perhaps a better keyboard and how much my bonus will be.
I'm currently on a TiBook 500Mhz, and an ol PIII 600Mhz for a desktop and need to upgrade both by the end of the year. Going all mac of course.

I bought the 1.6 and 23" display. I am very happy with it. I was previously on the 17" iMac. This is a big difference and is perfect for me.

Right..... if you are happy; that's all that matters. I'm on a duel 500 I've had for 3+ years without any issues-except in recently released games. I did order a G5, so that should take me through the next 3 to 4 years.
Congrats and good fortune.

The 1.6 G5 is an excellent machine - faster and better than any previous single G4 machine. Whilst it is interesting seeing other threads compare the different models, personally I think you cant go wrong with any of the G5 models on offer. I have a G4 15" 1Ghz PowerBook and think that it is fantastic, so a G5 must be amazing.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear I have some company in the "lowly" 1.6 world. I am very happy, this thing screams. Cant wait to get a gig of ram in here to really see the action.

You should be happy. Everyone has the tendency to go ga ga over the top of the line. All the tests I have seen make me believe the 1.6 will hold its own against the outgoing speed champ (the 1.42 dual G4). The outgoing G4's can't hold a candle to the G5's bus among other things. I think the older G4's are fine machines but you do get many perks with the G5.
People seem to forget all the little things all the G5's offer when comparing it to the G4's. USB 2.0, optical digital I/O, USB+Firewire+ headphone ports on the front, the bragging rights of being a 64 bit computer, crazy aluminum case, whisper quiet, faster superdrive, SATA, 400W power supply (600 for the dual) and most importantly the future. Did I mention the aluminum case?
Good choice. Use it in good health.

Yes, you made a good choice, and I'm jealous.
You have to maintain a perspective on all the "the 1.6/1.8 are crippled, only the dual is worth it" talk. People who hang out here are often "must-have-the-biggest-and-fastest" types, whether they really need it or not. You can pretty safely ignore them.
The 1.6 is not as good as the 1.8 which is not as good as the 2.0 dual. But the 1.6 is also not as expensive as the 1.8 which is not as expensive as the 2.0 dual. Just enjoy it and ignore the talk.

Don't sweat it.
I bought a 1.6 and I love it. It has everything I need, and room to grow. Things will only get better as the OS and software take full advantage of the G5. I bumped it up to 768MB of RAM and it runs quite nicely.
Some people are just obsessed with having the absolute fastest machine they can, even though they do not need it. If you think that's bad here, take a look around the PC world. People are constantly trying to squeeze out another 2-3% speed and then bragging about it, as though you could really tell the difference between 146 fps and 149 fps in Unreal Tournament. A bunch of false bravado from pubescent teenagers in most cases.

I bought a 1.6 and had the same concerns you did--but am totally happy with it. I spent the extra money on a 20" cinema display.

And the beauty of it all is that none of the G5's have even reached their potential. Wait until Panther and some optimized apps are released, then you'll see some real performance. It will be like getting a brand new computer all over again.
G3s and G4's will also see improvements with Panther, but not as dramatic as the G5's.
