I just received my CTO 1.8 today and I was curious about placement. Is it bad on a computer if you place it on the carpet? The only negative thing I was wondering about would be static electricity.

Any thoughts?

static electricity won't be a problem as long as you're not sliding it around the carpet, plus technically all the components should be shielded while in the case.

Maybe one of these anti-static mats will help, courtesy of Google:

anti static mats

Maybe just a sheet of wood or plastic to keep the computer off the carpet would work. Got mine on wood, no bolts of lightning yet.

Several people at work keep their G4s on the floor. I maintain them, install hardware, software from time to time. The few on the floor tend to suck in more dust from the carpet than the ones on the desktops. And the carpet is very low pyle-dense industrial carpet, with little office traffic around.

kahpoosa is right on this.. the floor isn't a good place to keep a computer, whatever you want to say.

I find my g4 sucks in a LOT of dust.. so much that i have to clean it's vents every week or two to keep it from getting loud ...
and this is a rather clean house

Static won't be a problem, since the machine will be plugged in (and thus grounded).

As for dust... it won't really harm anything as long as there isn't a huge thick coat of dust on everything. So yes, on the floor it'll pick up more dust than on your desk, so just be aware that it will need more frequent dusting.
