I am looking for an Apple desktop for Java development. I currently have a 500Mhz Cube and it's too slow.

I am wondering if I should get a G4 or G5 desktop? Will I see a big difference between the G4 and G5 for what I am doing? Or would a big difference only be noticeable if I was in the multimedia field?

By going to CompUSA I can't tell if the G5 will give me the most bang for the buck for what I will be doing.

Thanks for any input

Hey mosespatrader. OSX in general, is a great Java dev. environment. I did a project last year with JBuilder 7SE, and I was quite happy with the speed, and stability of OSX and JBuilder (which itself is a testimony to the stability of Java on OSX, as JBuilder is a java app). My project was about 90% platform independent, but I wanted to take advantage of Mac UIness when on OSX, and Win UIness on Win, Linux, etc. The tools are there, and Apple has proven itself committed to being a solid Java OS.

I know many people using 1GHz Titanium PowerBooks for Java dev, and they are quite pleased with the performance. I don't know the details about what you are doing, but my hunch is you would be delighted with a dual proc G4 and would get a very good deal on one.
