I can't wait to see what it can do with FCP 4. I really want to see what I can throw at it. I got the 9800 for some gaming here and there so I hope to have some fun when I crack open the box.
-Jerry C
P.S. I just remembered I have a 250GB SATA drive to go in but I need to order more RAM.

This is great news, largely because I feared the CTO orders (or BTO, whichever your preference) would ship later, since they might require more work on Apple's part.
Looking forward to hearing how you like the ATI 9800 in there. I ordered my dual with the same thing.
Have fun!

Cool! Maybe my Dual with 9800/BT will make it out the door soon. I ordered mine 6/24. I was just thinking this morning, that this is a way of life for Mac users. I went through this with the PB17, the PB800DVI, the PB500; though the G5 is the worst/best. Been using alot of XCode, and the code completion stuff is cool, but on my PB17, I usually have a 1-4 second pause before the completion options pop up. Kinda kills the flow, and wastes alot of time. Common Apple!

Yes, online status changed to shipping then I got my Do_not_reply@apple.com email with a tracking number. Before I got the email I did not have a tracking number show up on the order status page, it only showed "shipped".
I feel close to you guys but it is MY shipping email not OUR shipping email

Wow, CONGRATS! Be sure to post a plethora of pics & impressions when you get it! Were the BT and 9800 Pro the only BTO options aside from the 250GIG HD?
Let us know how UT2003 runs too

Want to see how UT2K3 does on a G5? Apparently XLR8 Your Mac has benchmarks. 162 FPS at 1024x768 at high quality settings on flyby mode. Botmatch is CPU-bound and so doesn't sound as impressive (58 FPS? Bah!) but the G5 is about 70% faster.
One thing's for sure: if you're a Mac gamer looking for a new system, you owe it to yourself to get a G5 and the fastest video card you can afford (at least a 9600 Pro). Even with a 9800, the dual-1.25 lags way behind.

Xlr8 does have a nice write-up.
I just got off the phone with the Apple store and they said my G5 may have missed being picked up last night but that it should go out today and be here tommorow. The rep I spoke to said that they had no real way of checking to see if the box actually got picked up but that it was almost a sure thing that it would be out today.

Get got off the phone with Apple, and I was told that my Dual G5 was build, and should be shipping out today, which would have it here by Monday - probably Tues. worse case. It'd really be nice if Apple improved their web status process to give more information than either 'open' or 'shipped'. Seems there at least 3 additional steps in the process (build request, building, build completed/prepare for shipping) that I've been told about. Sure would cut down on calls! I was really expecting my date to get bumped again, so this is good news. BTW, ordered 6/24.

Gaming performance! How do 3D games look? Are they fast? What kind of frame rates do you get?

This is replacing my trusty old (best computer I've ever owned before) dual 800 QS. I will have it hooked up to a 20in Cinema Display. I only have the 512MB RAM it shipped with but will add at least 1GB (2x 512's ?) maybe more. I have UT2003, MOHAA, and Q3A among others and will try to do some benches for you guys.
I'm going home in a about 45 min and have a 2 hour lunch break so I'll try to load up some stuff. I'll wait to load FCP4 till tonight as it will take an hour to install just that. One question: can I just drag the games off my old G4 through firewire target mode and launch them or will I have problems? I can run fresh config files so I don't think it will hurt.
I couldn't resist opening the box before I took it home and I have to say that the attention to detail on this thing is mind numbing. I still can't believe the ATI 9800's capacitors (I think they are the little cylinders) on the card are all silver as well as the card's heatsink (it has a fan) on the 9800 all seem to match the aluminum case.

Who said anything about throwing it away . My little brother wants it. The moment I told him I was selling it he made me promise to let him buy it. It is another CTO (GF3) and I love it but I wanted the G5, but it is nice to keep it in the family. In about 2 years it crashed on me 3x's (yes just 3x's). I only hope the G5 is nearly as stable. Besides, how is Apple to stay in business if people only buy 2-3 computers a decade. I'm just doing my part. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it.

I did the same thing. When I ordered my Dual 2Ghz, I sold my Dual 1.25 to my brother. Nicer to keep it in the family.

I have it running and I must say it is much much quieter than my QS dual 800.
I ran Q3A (newest version) and it ran at max everything (textures and all) default config with sound on:
1024x768 = 301.4 fps (automatic & high slewing)
1680x1050 = 187.7 fps
I tried the bench app for UT2003 but it quits with an applescript error. I try again.
I was very scared when I launched Q3A and started to hear a high pitch screech that would go away when I quit Quake. I first thought the fan on the Radeon was bad but I looked under the desk and my UPS was protesting the fact that I was running the G4 and the G5 on it. Opps.

Oh yea. That's some serious fps high res. with Quake III. When we're not busy trying to pay for our Duals, gaming will be top notch How is Quartz Extreme with the 9800? Expose? smoothness scrolling, etc? I just need to live vicariously through you for a couple more days...

It seems much more responsive than my dual G4 was (not that is really felt slow). I don't have Panther yet so I can't answer about Expose' but scrolling is very fast ( my G4 would start to tear the image a bit if you grabbed the scroll-bar and jerked it up and down) and is very smooth.
UT2003 Flyby Asbestos @ 1024x768:
default config-
Unknown CP/ 2000 MHz/ATI Radeon 9800 OpenGL Engine/Score: 79.946884 Min FPS: 43.855072 Average FPS: 159.733780 Max FPS: 437.774261
It seems that Mike's review over at xlr8 shows that the retail 9800 is nearly identical. I think I have less RAM and I've been doing all these benches back to back so it may hurt a little but very close.
It seems that as far as games go the dual G5 can play most of the current stuff at the full 1680x1050 res of the 20 inch CD with little trouble.

Hydra,
Can you hear the fans of the ATi 9800 during:
1) Normal, non-game usage
2) Game usage
I was curious if all of Apple's hard work keeping the G5 quiet might go out the window with the 9800 installed....
Thanks....

That's want I wanted to hear! I'll be installing the latest beta of Panther when mine arrives, so I'll let you know how that goes. A little off topic, but how does the Apple 20in do with refresh/games? I bought a Formac 2010 last year, mostly because it had a 10-14 ms refresh.

It is very quiet. I can easily hear the HD making noise. In two years with a QS dual 800 I couldn't even verify that it had HD's in it with the noise from the fans drowning out all other noises. The fans have a low hummming whoosing noise more like a ceiling fan and launching a cpu intensive task causes them to purr a little louder but I would not catagorize them as loud. I don't know if I can yet distinguish the fan on the graphics card from the 9 others in the case but then again I have only played with it for about an hour. I have it on the desk right now only about 2 feet from my head so I probably have it closer than most will.
I expected it to be quiet, not silent, but It has not dissapointed me in the least. The build quality and even the laser etched pictograms on the inside of the metal door have an astonishing level of quality. It reminds me of the feeling you get from running your hands over the interior of an Audi. Everthing has an incrediuble tactile quality and sense of robustness. I can't wait to get home and use it some more - I sadly type this on my office's PC ;(
Funny, I just tapped the side of this Compaq and it feels pretty crummy. You almost reflexively pull you hand away. When you tap the G5 you then want to touch it and to keep touching it I have heard many complaints about the keyboard but I don't mind it. It seems to be about an inch or so narrower but I do like having the USB ports on the back instead. I have never thought KB's were Apple's strong suit since the demise of the Pro II (was that the name?)
I need to order RAM now and was wondering if it was worth it getting GEIL or something like it runnning a CAS of 2.5 or less from NewEgg? I know that the 512 in it now may be 3.0 and all RAM added will run at that speed but in the future if I swap out the original RAM I can go to all 2.5. I am on the fence about whether it matters or not.
I'll install the WD 250 GB SATA when I get home and try to post some pictures of the 9800 and the drive install but how do I post jpegs to these forums?

Hey Hydra, I have 4 sticks of 512 DDR3200 XMS Corsair, Extreme Low Latency (2 cas) waiting to go in. If you wait till early next week when my G5 arrives, I'll do some benches to see what kind of difference 2 cas memory makes. I'm pretty sure I want to take out the existing 512 3 cas. I suspect the bus throttles down to the slower rate. Just a guess, but I don't want to take any chances.

Do you have a .Mac subscription? If not, you could use my iDisk to upload the pics. I'm *dying* to see some real pics of these G5's from users.
My account is, "Foxdog". Just drop the pics in there and I'll try to put them in my Sites folder for easier viewing as soon as possible.
Edit: sorry, I gave you wrong directions on getting to my iDisk. Here we go:
"If you're using Mac OS X version 10.1 or later, choose Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu and type http://idisk.mac.com/membername-Public (where "membername" is the person's .Mac member name). If the Public folder is protected with a password, type "public" in the username field and type the Public folder password in the password field." - Apple
So, you'd type http://idisk.mac.com/foxdog

Ordered on 7/15: 2gigs of ram, superdrive, 9800 pro, bluetooth, 250 gig hdd.
My original ship date was 9/23. I called Apple to add some more stuff to my order on Monday I asked when it would be shipping and Apple said the end of the month. And now when I check the status, it says "...will ship by 9/30." So who knows at this point but I will raise hell if it's not in the mail on 9/30.

Yes, but it would have to be a BUNCH.
I wouldn't worry about it. If it does go down it will be back in 12 hours.
Someone else could host the photos too.

Btw Hydra, I was just looking at your other albums and came across your 2 week road trip across the country. Something more beautiful than the G5's (erp ) is your car. It looks like you've taken very good care of your car...good man. *Such* an excellent car design and I love the pictures (cept the Chicago pics; I see too much of it)!

Funny, I forgot everyone would be able to see all my albums- but enjoy. There are allot of boring pictures of my marine fish tank too. That road-trip was almost 2 years ago, about 1 month after 9-11-01. It was me and my bro 2 seats and a car covered in an American flag. It was all done in vinyl and I took it off the car after almost 1 year with it on. In the end it drew way too much attention. Some good attention but much bad as well.
I just got rid of the car and was going to get an M3 but I had a really bad experience with the BMW dealer. I've had 3 straight Boxsters ( two S's) and was hoping they would put a bigger motor it it but I may have to wait on that one. Never buy a mid-engined car as you'll never want to do it any other way
I have a picture of a certain Apple iCEO with my brother We stumbled across the grand opening of the Palo Alto Apple store (my bro needed something for his laptop on the swing through LasVegas). Steve agreed to take it with him after turning down many others - I think it had something to do with the car.

Jerry, agreed on the mid engine thing. I had a 914, now a Boxster S. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for your G5 pics, I'm still awaiting my dualie...

Back on subject; could you take some pictures of your G5 sitting next to your G4 so I can see what they look like in comparison? Maybe 3 shots or so? Front pic, back pic, and looking down, perhaps?
