Hi,

I just picked up a virtually free Powermac 7200 and I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to get it running on a wireless network?

I guess I can just stick a wireless PCI networking card in it and it should work, but Nothing Is As Easy As It Seems. Anyone else tried this before I waste some money on a WiFi card? Or does anyone know what WiFi cards will work in it?

Hi there, you should be able to use a WiFi PCI card in this...but keep in mind that the 7200 is getting quite old in it's design and has some serious limitations with speed and upgrade ability..but I always like getting stuff for free too! or close to it..but if you do get a wireless set up don't expect a lot of performance out of that box...unless you plan to upgrade it even further with a 7600 logic board and a G3 upgrade etc..good luck...Mark

As far as I have found out the PCI cards does not work on the Mac. USB card does work and at dlink.com there is a usb wireless thing but the mac drivers are for OS X only.

The cheapest way to get X to run on it is a 7500/7600 motherboard and a 604E cpu but then you need at least a 2 GB HD to shoe horn 10.1.5 into it. You will end up paying for it s much as a beige G3, not clever at all

Accept the limitations of the 7200 and use it in 8.6 to play networked DOOM or something

Heh Well it's actually my first messing around with a mac since I had a Performa 475, so it seems quite fast compared to that

The reason I'm asking about this, in case anyone is curious, is that I was toying with the idea of getting an Airport base station and using it to start a wireless network for some PC's and the Mac. I aim to have a G5 someday, so that will be getting added to the network someday too

I may just grab a cheapo PCI card from some PC place and work out how difficult it is to write a driver for it. It seems like a good idea at the moment, but then I have been drinking cherry based beer...
