back in May when my 60GB almost died, I got a 80GB replacement under warranty, and bought a 120GB instantly to transfer my data to.
I got a Master/slave 24 inch cable to replace the 18 inch cable in my Beige Rev A 266.
3 weeks ago corruption got really really bad.
Once I get my G4 MDD and move the 120GB to it, and keep the 80GB and format and partition into 8GB/66GB and reinstall will that solve the severe corruption?
a friend ran DW 2.1.2 which can't see my slave, but DW 3 saw it but says it gets an erorr it did fix it once.
Anyways my friend says to throw my Beige G3 in the garbage or sell it which will only get $50 for it. I want to keep it as a file/web/MySQL server.
will going back to the 18" cables and only having one HD solve this corruption problem? I had a week of unstable and un-installable OS from a CPU upgrade which was removed 2 weeks ago.
I have built my Beige G3 around setting it up as a server when I got my new Mac, and spending allot of money on a router a week ago.
So will changing the IDE cable fix the problem (with a reformat and clean OS install)? Any idea's as to why the instability lately?
My friend says he will refuse to help me with my Beige once I get my new Mac since he thinks I don't need it (which is ****ing bullshit)) I need a separate server for my work.

The early Beige G3s had an IDE controller chip that did not reliably support slave drives. The solution was to replace the controller chip, or add a PCI ATA controller card.

Yes my Beige G3 doesn't support Slave since it's a Rev A, but Mac OS X provides a software patch for it.
I am thinking that's not working. Only a few more days until my Mac arrives. I paid the $60 for over-night shipping.
going back to the Master only cables, would that solve the problem? Along with a nice format/reinstall? I am thinking it will.

The master/slave issue is a hardware problem.
Going back to master only and reformatting will solve the problem.

would going back to the 18" cables make a difference? or can I just keep on the 24" master/slave cables (which are brand new) and put the drive and CD-ROM at the end of the cable?
worst case I have until a week wednesday until my new Mac arrives. It's being assembled I order through a store and got a discount to there Order Status only says open or Shipped. They called Thursday and were told that it was being assembled and would be shipped next week.

Anyone with a Beige have this problem and a solution? is the IDE cable length important when I go back to having a Master only HD?

The original equipment on a Beige PowerMac should be fine. The software patch in Mac OS X is not going to be reliable, especially on a computer that is not officially supported by OS X. The PCI controller card is the only reliable solution and cheap ones are available at eBay right now, and other retailers like J&R or CompUSA. Sonnet Technologies has some, but they're far more expensive than you need for a Beige PM. Look for an older ATA66 card

This Mac is 100% supported in Mac OS X.
I will just keep the 80GB in here when I get my G4 next week. but I want to make sure that having the 24" IDE cable with a Master and slave ends won't continue to cuase the corruption.
This Mac will be used for File, Apache, PHP, and MySQL server with SSH for administration.
