I am contemplating ordering a dual G5 and noted that I could save $200 if I change the optical drive from a superdrive to a combodrive. I could then purchase a Pioneer DVR-106D for less than this and end up with a spare combo drive. Could someone confirm that this is the drive used in the G5. Also, would iDVD work with this drive? Thanks

I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

Apple-firmware drives don't always work in PCs properly (assuming that's what you're planning to do), and OEM drives don't always work in Macs properly (although people have gotten the 106 to work).

Personally, I'd just get the stock SuperDrive. Combo drives are not that expensive anyway, if you ever do need one in the future.

I don't know if 3rd part drives work in the G5. I'd assume they don't. The cd drive door looks really special, and the people I've talked to have given me the impression 3rd party drives don't work.

I can't say for certain whether iDVD will work with an aftermarket internal DVD-R drive.

However, I can tell you that it's not a Pioneer drive at all -- it's a Sony U500 or 510 or something like that.

As for the drive tray bezel... yeah, that's why the fronts of the trays snap off (nondestructively). Apple puts a cosmetic cap at the end, but it'll work fine without it.

Update: I read on Macintouch that some G5s are shipping with Sony drives (like the G5s I saw at the Apple Store and CompUSA here), and that others shipped with Pioneer DVR-106A drives.
