I know this is splitting hairs but my impressions of the G5 I have used in Apple Retail Stores are moderate. I really, really like the design, but my only hang up is the way in which the optical drive opens.

It just sounds flimsy and 'plasticy' It would have been nicer if the motion was smoothed out some, or even made more like the G4.

Of course, that's just my opinion...

I totally agree.

The superdrive opening and closing on my '02 quicksilver sounds akin to the closing of a door on a Mercedes.

On the G5 it sounds tinny and clackety.

One of the first things I plan to do with my new G5 is to add some teflon tape to the edges of the door cover and perhaps some damping material to the back of the door to boot!

Much agreed. It's more sold. More rigid. Let's hope this is in the works to amend.

It does seem a little cheap now that I think about it, but the way it works is cool. Having the tray push down the door in the vertical plane is very spiffy.

Yes!

The action is cool, the sound is not.

My sister has a G5 1.8, and the door is the tackiest/cheapest contraption I can imagine.

I don't think Apple could have designed it to be more inelegant had they tried.

Its really bad. I hope they redesign the door before the 3.0 G5's come out next summer.

If this is the biggest problem the G5 has we are ALL really lucky.

For some reason when I was in the Apple store and saw a G5 in person a while ago I found the action and sound of the drive door a little jarring. On my brand new dual G5 it sounds much more subdued. Not much more racket than my old QS dual 800. Maybe it's all psychological. Having it sitting here on my desk may make me overlook the flaws (like being in a new relationship

I tried them side by side and the QS to its credit does have a more smooth gliding nature to it and the G5 has more of a thunk sound. I kind of feel they are in keeping with the divergent design philosophies ( G4 QS = smooth curvy and beautiful - G5= Industrial and hard hitting).

As to it being tacky - Everyone I have shown it to says something like -" WOW! Apple must have spent a bundle on that drive door." It's a mechanical solution but 99% of the people out there have no clue how things work.

I recall a Compaq support tech getting a call:

Tech: " Hello, what can I do for you today?"

Customer: " Yes, I'm having trouble with my cup holder. I put a cup of coffee on it and it broke off."

Tech: "Er, what are you talking about?"

Customer: " When I push the button on the front of the computer the cup holder pops out."

Tech: "Are you talking about the CDROM drive?"

Customer: " What's a CDROM drive?"

Tech:

If they want the Powerbooks and Power Macs to look like the same family they should put slot drives in the desktop models.

They are not the same family. One is a laptop and one is a desktop/workstation. The big problem w/ slot drives is the lack of choices and that they tend to be a generation behind the specs of tray loaders. After all the complaints about the lack of a second optical drive bay I can not begin to imagine the unrest if Apple put a lone slotloader in the G5

Much agreed. A slot fed solution would be PERFECT. Don't tell me that if Apple wanted a fast slot fed drive that there wouldn't be people LINING up to make them?
