Ok I ordered a DP 2.0 stock and was happy with that. Not happy with the waiting mind you, but whatever. I have been reading the forums and to be honest am a little worried. I hear that people are getting delays etc. But most concerning is that I hear rumors of revisions in january possibly bumping speeds slightly up (2.25 or so) and prices slightly down. So should I :
1. Keep order and wait it out
2. Order a Imac 1.25 and then when revisions come out give it to my wife and order a new one (should be faster shipping by then)
3. Order a DP 1.25 G4 and then give that to wife down the road
4. ???
I don't really play games, just mostly web, word, etc.
I am coming from a PC world, and Mac scares me as they aren't as upgradable. help
thanks

the fact of the matter is speed bumps and price decreases happen. you can't stop that. and that shouldn't stop you from buying a computer that you want.
back in 1999, i could've thought "hmmm...i bet G5's will be out in the future, and at faster speeds and lower prices. i shouldn't buy my G4 450"; but if i did that, i wouldn't be typing on it right now. and you don't know about the upgradability of the G5's yet. i didn't think when i got my G4 that it would be upgradable; now there are several upgrades that could triple my processing speed.
stick with your guts, stick with your order. once you start using it, you will have no regrets.
and welcome!

Using a DP G5 for web and word is like using a bazooka to kill mosquitoes. Also, if the G5 is anything like the G4, you'll be able to upgrade just about anything in it (I have a dual 867 G4 and I could upgrade [or have upgraded] processors, ram, drives, PCI cards, graphics card, power supply, fans, etc...). The G5 will be lots of fun, but it's overkill for what you're doing.

I agree; I'd say it's overkill. I'd order a DP 1.25Ghz G4 simply b/c I did just that and couldn't be happier...it's plenty fast for me, and I do all that you do PLUS gaming, light PhotoShop work, etc.

- If you can afford a G5, get a G5. No reason for you to screw around with the old tower if you can afford the new one.
- The dual G5 2.0 is already way more than you need and will be expandable for years into the future, so I wouldn't wait just for an extra bit of power. Hell, the 1.6/1.8 is probably more than you need, and you could walk into a store and buy one today. The only reason for you to wait is to make sure initial production/design bugs, if any, are fixed. I haven't heard of any bugs yet. The only other reason to wait is that Panther will come installed in a few months, saving the $130 upgrade cost.
- Even if upgrades are announced in January or February there could be a lag before they ship. So you're talking about waiting another 4-5 months on the chance of an upgrade that you don't need.
- However, if you're nervous about it, go ahead and get started on an iMac and give it to your wife later. An iMac is more than enough for web-surfing and word processing - you might find that you don't even need a G5.
Welcome to Mac - you'll be hooked in no time.

At *just* 3K that dual G5 sure is tempting, whether I need the power or not. I don't mean to say 3K is chump change, just that relative to what top of the line Macs of cost in the past - this seems like a steal to me.
Apple has done a great job with the G5 line. I hope the margins allow them to continue doing hardcore R&D.

the G5 is a sweet machine...at a price. but if you can deal with that, then why not? for what you get, it actually is a pretty good deal. who cares if it's overkill? do people say "man, close to 400 hp is too much for my drive to work. i guess i won't get the Porsche; i'll stick to the Honda Accord."
and maybe when you realize the G5's computing potential, it will open the doors for you do to more stuff with your computer, rather than just word and web stuff.
