I had been considering purchasing a new or refurb Powermac G4 dual 1.42 for the last two months but had finally resigned myself to getting a Dual 2ghz G5 as the difference in price (edu discount on G5 vs a new G4 1.42 from macwarehouse) only amounted to three hundred dollars.

"If only I had jumped on one of the $1999 refurbs from Tiger Direct!" I kept telling myself.

Well today I walked into a CompUSA and they had a demo G4 1.42 out for only $1999. I asked if they had the box and all the accessories and sure enough, they did! The machine was in excellent condition with only a few streaks on the side walls.

So I said 'wrap it up!' While the sales person was doing so, he pitched me the AppleCare for only $150. Knowing that I would probably sell the machine in 12-18 months, I declined. As a rule, I never buy extended warranties.

Well as you might know, CompUSA really loves to sell extended warranties, so the next pitch was $150 for the AppleCare plus $50 in free accessories. I declined again as I already have plenty of CDR and DVDR media.

So he says, OK, we'll reduce the price of the machine to $1799 and add the AppleCare for $250 for a grand total of $2050. At that point I agreed, as I felt it would enhance the resale value.

So I have a Dual G4 1.42 plus three years of AppleCare for $2050. I think I did pretty well

CompUSA salespersons will do virtually anything to sell an extended warranty -- discounting the computer and practically *giving* you the warranty -- because they make a higher percentage commission on the extended warranty (or other peripherals) than they do on the computer.

Not to mention the money they make on a display model is probably all gravy as far as the store manager's bonus target is concerned.

Maybe he knows something you don't?

Yegads! I sure hope not!

*goes off to check charge on fire extinguisher*

I'm sure the two previous posters have it right. It's ok to sell off a demo for anything above cost, especially if you combine it with an almost pure profit item like an extended warranty.

Just so everybody knows:
Right now you can still get the DUAL 1.42/512MB/120GB/Superdrive
from the Apple Store Online special deals (refurbished).

It is only $1,999. SO, not quite as good as this guy, but close.
