I picked up my stock Dual at the AirbornExpress depot this morning (so I wouldn't have to wait all day for delivery). Got it home, installed an extra 2Gig of memory, and it's up and running.

Impressions
  • It's very quiet. Haven't done much to really push the system yet.
  • Others have complained about the optical drive door being clunky. Seems just fine to me. Sure, it's not a StarTrek door, but come on...
  • Dual monitor support worked without any setup at all. I'm coming from the Windows world, so maybe this isn't a surprise to anyone else. My 20" Cinema Display looks fantastic.
  • Immedately ditched the included mouse for my wireless logitech. Besides the lack of multiple buttons, the profile of the Apple mouse aggravates the pain in my wrist.
Anyway, I'm enjoying the whole experience this morning. Nice to be home again (back on Mac)!

Yes, it's got 2.5GB of RAM. Should be good for running AfterEffects and FCP4, as well as Oracle. I got the stock 9600 video card.

I'm almost done settting up my development environment (JEdit, Tomcat, Ant). OS X just rocks for this kind of stuff.

Haven't heard anything regarding a new version of Oracle for OS X. I'm sure it's in the works though. I bought memory from Crucial, four sticks of 512MB DDR3200.

Sorry, I don't do any Flash development, so can't help you there.

I will tell you that I feel much more productive today than yesterday. I think that has less to do with the incredible performance of my new G5 and the excellence of OS X, and more to do with not checking delivery status every five or 10 minutes.

lol dude awesome, and welcome to the mac platform!

Ergh dual monitors on OS X rawk. The last time I tried to do it on windows xp it wouldn't let me set up the second monitor and after screwing around + reinstalling the drivers for everything (yes manually deleting the monitors, video cards, even motherboard component drivers didn't work), and finally I install windows 2000.. then it worked..

Yeah I can see where you're coming from ^___^

LOL! I completly understand your excitement with the order. Im already tired of calling the retailers asking if they have yet received the Dual G5.

The reason i asked you about Flash is that i wil l buy a new Mac now and i cant decide wich one to get, a Dual G5 or a PB 15''. My Powermac still does a pretty good job (QuickSilver Dual 1Ghz) but my Ti 550 is so slow its unberable. I have promised myself that i would not get a new G4 ( hence the reason of interest for the G5 ), so I really want to know if the power of the G5 is much better then the mobility that a Powerbook has to offer. I tried a Dual G5 back in July and i was seriously impressed with the raw power of that beast, but i havent tried Flash on it. Can you please tell me some more everyday benchmarks? Opening stuff, multitasking ability, etc etc. I would really be thankfull if you could make a review of your Dual.

Thanks in advance.
