OK Today I came across my second iMac both exhibiting the same symptoms. Their hard drives make very lout knocking noises. But the other symptom is that the video is very distorted, colors are off, and the video will even mouse the RGB in and out of sync. And they KB and Mouse won't work. Now the odds are slim that both machines had both their video and hard drives go at the same time. But Its also unlikely that the HD's are causing the video to be distorted, even when booted off a CD. Any ideas?

You have just confirmed a problem I'm having with my 99 iMAC - so loud knocking is a failing hard drive?

Yes and my video problems were both from corrupt firmware. I didn't try to install OS X as many suggest. But what I didn't realize is that I did try and boot both machine from my iBook running in firewire mode, and thats what the video problem is.
