xlr8yourmac should have all the information you need. Remember OS X will have to be on a partition within the first 8GB of the drive as mentioned in this Apple KB doc

this may be useful re: installation http://www.macworld.com/2001/10/bc/howtoimac/
When I replaced the original 6GB in my Rev D with a Western Digital I had a few problems not least with noise - a constant whine which combined with the fans on this generation iMac proved unbearable. I exchanged that for an IBM (Hitachi really) 60GB - a Deskstar 120GXP http://www.hgst.com/hdd/desk/ds120gxp.htm
- with 'noise dampening' and it's never missed a beat.
A very very quiet beat too...

All I can say is enjoy taking it apart. I hated those things when I worked as an Apple tech. They weren't really difficult to work on, just annoying in comparison to working on the towers. Just be sure to get the drive chasis aligned correctly when replacing it. I might have the tech document for it around here somewhere. Those things are really helpful.

I have replaced the hard drive on my Rev. C iMac with a 40gb Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drive, and it was worth EVERY penny. Quiet as a church mouse, and no heat issues at all, none. I also upgraded the CPU with a TechnoWarehouse 500mhz upgrade, nice difference, OS X moves much better now, a lot less waiting.
As for taking it apart, just take your time, I don't find it hard to work on, but everything has to be just so when putting it back together. Enjoy.
