hey, im sort of new to this whole mac world so i was just wondering what the equivalent, if there is any, of defragmenting? im planning on doing some "spring" cleaning and just need some advice.

There is an application named Aladdin Spring Cleaning which works effectively.

From my experience Norton is a decent application but is overrated in the functional department.

Unix seems the route to go even if you are beginner. Refer to the unix forums if you need any help. There are utilities on Versiontracker but end up screwing your computer up.

Whichever works ya know.

Actually both ways to spell it are correct. Also, unless your drive is getting full, you probably have NO fragmenting at all. The way Mac's work, it will only break up a file if theres not a single chunk of space ANYWHERE on the disk to fit the file. So if you have a 60 GB drive with 30 GB of stuff on it, chances are any file you add, there will be a big enough area somewhere on the disk to place the file without breaking it up.
