I can see 6 in the picts. Which are the 2 that are on all the time? And where are the other 3?

On my dual G5 I can see that the power supply has two fans in the front at the very bottom of the case - they are a bit hard to see (you can only see them through the perforated aluminum and they are black). You basically have to be in a dark room and hold a small flashlight up to the front to light them up. The Radeon 9800 has one so I think that adds up to 9.

one in the power supply in the bottom

so depending on whether you get the 9600 or 9800 Pro, you could have ten fans (I haven't seen it in the G5, but I'm assuming the 9600 is passively cooled.

There is only one fan in front of the PCI slots, and one in front of the hard drives. Looking at my Dualie right now. Not sure how many are in the power supply.

Yes, the 9600 does not have a fan.

Ya that is what I thought. I hope the power supply doesn't have 3 bloody fans.

I can see what looks like 2 fans on my dual G5's PS. I'll shut it off later and take a close look. Maybe the single G5's only have 1 fan.

I turned off the dual G5, turned off the lights in the room, held a flashlight up against the holy aluminum front and took some pictures of the power-supply and it has 2 fans for sure.

Doesn't really matter how many fans... it's very quiet.

Better picture:

Let's see...

1 in front of hard drives
1 in front of PCI slots
2 in front of G5s
2 behind of G5s
2 inside power supply
1 on Radeon 9800 Pro

If this is true, a G5 can have anywhere from 7 to 9 fans, depending on the configuration.

More pictures here.

Having listened to the G5 up close, I'd say it's pretty quiet, but Apple can do better. It's certainly way better than those old windtunnel G4s though.

There is one you guys are missing, there is a fan behind the fan that is in front of the hard drives, its hard to see because its faced a different way from the rest and you can't see the blades, its a blower fan that sucks air from the back of the motherboard I think.

So thats 8 on my 1.8, 9 with the dual, and I don't know about the 9800

Ahh, you must be talking about this:

I saw that earlier, but wasn't sure exactly what it was.

So with the 9800 Pro, that's 10 fans, with a 1.6/1.8 with 9600 Pro having 8 fans.

No way man. I have the Dual 1.25 at work which is a "windtunnel" model. It came with the newer fan model after the recall. The thing is VERY quite, much much quieter then the Quicksilver 733. If the G5 is supposed to be quieter then that I will be very happy.

"Why not have just one fan that does it all?"

"But this one has 9..."

Reminds me of Spinal Tap.

I thought that was the RDF generator

Are you sure it's a fan? You are probably right because the motherboard has a huge heat-pipe on the back that you have to rip apart the G5 to see. I have a picture of it somewhere. I was wondering how they got the heat out from between the aluminum skin and the dark-side of the motherboard where all the important chips are.

I don't think so. I've got a dual 2.0 sitting 12 inches away and it's easily "Dell quiet." The only time this thing makes any significant noise (and even then it's still quieter than my 1GHz TiBook's fans) is when both processors are cranking away for a few minutes and the fans rev up.

By far, the loudest thing about this machine is the hard drive.

Simply typing on the keyboard drowns out any G5 fan noise!

I read somewhere that the Radeon is louder than the actual Mac.

Funny thing is if I take the side port OFF the fan that kicks in and makes the most noise is the one behind the Superdrive and before the hard drive. It is a different looking fan then the rest. Don’t know why that one would go full speed but the processor ones don’t do jack.
