Hi,
I plan to purchase a G5 1.8 in France. I can order it on AppleStore (2 to 3 weeks delivery with BTO) or buy it at my local dealer (only basic config but probably between 1 week and 2 weeks for delivery)
Basic configuration will be with no internal Bluetooth and a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphic card.
Is the GeForce performances equivalent to the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro or do I really need to order my G5 in BTO for having the ATI card?
I mention that I dont want the ATI Radeon 9800 because it is too expensive and noisy.
Let me know your thoughts and any link to those graphic cards benches with the 1.8 G5.
Thx
Fabrice

The Radeon would be a far better choice than the Geforce

Definately the 9600pro, it is way more powerful than the fx5200 ultra. I have just bought one for my pc and I am really impressed by the performance considering the price is so good.
Hope that helps

Do you think this card or another stronger will be able to be bought separately as a spare piece from Apple or ATI so that I dont have to BTO?

You can buy the Radeon 9800 retail, but it doesn't seem they currently offer the 9600 for Mac (other than from Apple). However, in the future, I'm sure you will be able to buy other cards, or maybe the 9800 when it comes down in price.

Eug is misrepresenting things SOMEWHAT, as HL2 does not represent typical ATI v. nVidia performance, but the 9600 is still a significantly better card than the 5200 Ultra.

Be happy.

I'd get the 9600 Pro if you plan on gaming AT ALL. It'd be WELL WORTH the extra wait to have that extra frame-rate horsepower from your graphics card.

Yeah, previous generation games on the 5200 won't be that bad. However, John Cormack has gone on record to say that in future games, this bench WILL be representative of the performance differences.
