Cancelled my CTO dual G5 today because I picked one up in person at my local store (The Westchester). Major thank you to the poster recommending checking with the local store!!

Now, to get my usr files from my old, ancient, stank-nasty slow ass dual 1ghz G4 to my new G5, I figure I'll boot the new G5 into target disk mode and run carbon copy cloner to move my apps/usr files from G4 to G5. Then I can wipe the G4 and put it out with the trash.

Pros/cons to this method? Something better? Thx for all replies.

To transfer your data - I posted an incredibly easy/user friendly version; see "laurenr" posting at:
transfer of data from old mac 2 new

As mentioned, I used Apple's Backup v@ (beta), but I am sure it will work same with another backup app.

As for other Applications, be VERY careful about transfer; clean installation from scratch is far safer. I have read many postings on Apple discussion boards about application transfers that have resulted in complete system freeze!

That's the Apple store I frequent Where do you live? I'll camp out by you curb and take the old G4

Target disk mode should work fine but be prepared for a major howl that will grow the longer you have it in that mode. I would be careful and not actually transfer the whole app folder though. I wouldn't touch the utilities folder as that may not have matching versions of what are on the new machine. CCC should be fine for transferring things and preserving permissions.

Also, If you have FCP installed take you Pro ID out of the /library/application support/ProApps folder (not the library in user) so you needn't have to reenter the serial number.
Adobe apps and other install stuff in the library/app support folder as well.

Don't get rid of the G4 before you are absolutely certain you don't need anything on it. Also if you use iTunes music store - de-authorize the G4.

Sorry Hydra, trash day was yesterday so you're a little too late. Seriously though, I used Terminal and ditto to grab the files I needed. I put the G4 in target mode and everything went smoothly from there. The G4 goes from here to my business partner who needs another machine. Don't worry about any iTunes store authorization, I have all the music I want on scratchy old vinyl and quadraphonic 8-track. Why buy it again? 8-)
More bad humour, I know. FYI, I'm about 30 mins or so north of that apple store, same county. L8r.

I'll have to make do with only my Dual G5/9800 as I just sold my dual 800 to my brother in Boston I live/work down-county now but I used to live up in the boonies in Northern Westchester - Waccabuc (a hamlet of South Salem) to be exact.

Hamlet of Lewisboro you mean 8-)
That's across the street from me here in Cross River. Nice to know there are a few others in this county with some speedy macs. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to chase some more deer away from my shrubberies.
