Hey--
I gave my parents my old iMac Snow... it has 192 RAM in it now... I think 64 built in and 128 extra from mac mall...
anyway, how much ram can go in those? I can put a 512 chip in there for a total of 576 right?
Or is the 64 not built in?
anyone, what is the biggest chip i can buy?
Where is a good place to get one?
I think it is easy to install, right?
Thanks.

Your iMac can hold 1 GB (2x512). A 512 stick runs about $70-90. Check out www.ramseeker.com for comparison shopping.

Cool. . there seems to be so many choices.... is cheap ram bad.. the only companies I know are edge, viking...
Is 70 dollar ram as opposed to 100 dollar ram that far off?
I'd rather get good ram for a bit more.
Also, my parents will be using hte computer for internet, e-mail, word processing.... they have dsl and are running Mac OS X... i know it loves ram... but...
currently the ram is at 192... should I put in a 256 chip, a 512 chip, or upgrade to a full RAM?
Is their a limit before it doesn't matter? would 640 be any different that 1gb for what they plan to do?
No need to get it if it won't do anything for them.

Pull out the 64MB stick and put a 512 in its place. That should be plenty of RAM for what they do. Both slots are very easy to access.

sounds good... i know it's cheap, but would a 256 chip do the trip... with the 128 that would be a healhty...
384.
I'll probably just get the 512 stick.

256MB is really the bare minimum for OS X; it seems happiest when you have at least 512. Beyond that you start getting into overkill territory, unless you're using apps that need more RAM, but none of the Macs in my office have less than 512.

I noticed a big difference going from 512 to 768 and a smaller, but still noticeable increase, going to 1GB.
Get as much as you can afford. They will appreciate it.
