So my newspaper had a company come in and install an xserve as a server for an application we use here. It was placed in our makeshift server room, which is connected to (but no walls) the office where I sit 20 feet away.

this thing is deafening! its like a fricking vaccum cleaner. and the worst thing is that its not constant. the fan cycles on every 2 minutes or so, runs for about 45-60 seconds, then shuts off. and the cycle repeats itself.

how do i make the fan run constantly so i can just tune the goddammed thing out? christ, i cant imagine how they could possibly make it so loud. must be a little turbine in there.

You should put it in its own room or some sort of case with a door in the front.

"Hello, what have we here?

well i dont really have that option. they bought a rack for it and a couple of routers but it's open faced. i think my only option is to find some way to force the fan to run full time so i can just tune it out. its very aggravating.

Rackmount servers are always loud as hell. They require a server room. You can't complain because you didnt do you research.

Sorry

fine i understand that. i dont make purchasing decisions. but you still didn't answer my question-is there a way to force the fans on all the time so that it doesn't cycle? is it supposed to cycle on and off in the first place?

Sure, place a book (or tape) over the ventilation holes.

Unfortunately, I think you just have to live with the noise. Tampering with variable speed fans on a server is a bad idea.

If it makes you feel any better, I can here our Microway servers from clear down the hall.
