I'm getting a brand new DP 1.25 G4 machine.
I currently have a DP 500 G4 machine.
My DP 500 has two drives: one for booting
with OS X and one for booting for OS 9.
I would like to move these drives to the
new machine to avoid reinstalling everything.
Then, I would like to put the (clean
install) OS X drive from the new DP 1.25
into the DP 500 for my kids (trickle
down economics).

I know it will work physically but my
question is: will the drives have all
the necessary system files to work
properly? That is, does an OS 9 or OS X
installation for a DP 1.25 have any different
files than the drives for a DP 500?

Will it work?

Yeah, it should work. But I'd do a fresh system install (Archive and Install) anyway to fully take advantage of the speed.

Well, that is kind of my question. How is
a fresh install going to give me any more speed?

I have everything where I want it. I don't
want to reinstall if I don't have to.
The only thing I can really think of is
video drivers. The more I think of that,
the more I believe I will want to swap
video cards, too. My DP 500 has a Radeon 8500
which should outperform the Radeon 9000
that comes with the DP 1.25 machine.

Maybe, depends on how 'trashed' your current install is. Keep in mind alot of applications can be just copied from one computer to another. All you need is a firewire cable, or a ethernet cable.
