Apple has 3 more days to ship my Dual G5. I order 7/25(Educational, 1gig ram, 250hd, Radeon 9800, Airport, Bluetooth) and my ship date has never changed from 10/6.

Monday at 5:00 PST they will be getting one nasty call, and will be only speaking to managers. I will be only accepting Overnight priority and some free stuff thrown in(iSight, Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard, or something....)

I have a feeling it is not going to ship. Truly unbelievable.

I am frustrated...

I feel your pain...us early Rev. A 17" PB adopters went through the same thing. It is quite rediculous...in a mere matter of months the speed bumped Rev. Bs will be out, and you've just been waiting around...sure hope it ships out soon for you, but in all honesty, Apple owes you nothing free. You "pre-ordered" a machine, knowing it wasn't available...it's just the price ya pay.

Webscreamer,
I definitely sympathize as well. In the future, don't take any stock in Apple's "first come, first served" rhetoric about online orders. Bah. I ordered my first dual G5 (2 250gig drives. ATI 9800 and Bluetooth) in late August, and got a "by 10/12" ship date. Then, someone noticed that the Apple store revised its shipping estimates to "10-15 biz days" so 3 days after placing my original order, I ordered the SAME configuration, and got a "By Sept 23" ship date.

And guess which one shipped first?? That's right, the later order (I cancelled the original order once the later one was on its way).

I know that's no consolation now, but it could be used as additional ammo when you're dealing with customer service. It IS NOT a first come first serve que, even though they say it is.

My Configure To Order (CTO) pre-order placed 07/06 has not shipped. In my mind, this has torpedoed the credibility of the online Apple Store CTO option for the following reasons:
  • if there is an availability problem with a CTO component, then just tell us what it is Apple! so we can make an informed opinion whether to cancel and pick up a stock unit at a local store. I will accept a parts shortage causing a delay, but the failure to explain the problem to us is totally under their control.
  • when they strayed from the "first come, first served" dictum they ventured out on thin ice (no matter how well intentioned the "edu first" policy may be) because they themselves created the expectation that early preorders would be honered first. In short they "changed the rules after the game started". While not a Cardinal sin, it planted the seeds of mistrust that were later reinforced by the failure to deliver on time.

it was the world's fastest computer when I ordered it!

Cancel your order, and pick it up at a local store. That's what others are doing.

I agree with alligator. That is how I got my PB 17. People on this board were upset about their order delays and I walked right into a Aple store in St. Louis and picked one up. The Apple guy said that they always get some stock that are for walk-ins only.

Thats what I did too. My Dual CTO seems like it was never going to come, I found out my local Apple store had one and I just bought it. Of course mine was only CTO because I added bluetooth. However I'm sure if your apple store has one they can make it meet your needs.

I had an order, pretty much the same as yours (except stock ram and no bluetooth) and it arrived four days after I ordered it which was a few weeks ago (I was quoted a five week delivery time). Others at my university ordered a dual G5 shortly after they were introduced and are still waiting for them. Clearly something is wrong with Apple's ordering system. Steve needs to clean house over there because he's just pissing off his best customers.

I suspect that the problem is systemic and not the fault of the poor phone weenies receiving the brunt of the hostility.

One reason I question the impact of the last minute "edu orders first" edict is that there probably wasn't a system in place to identify bona-fide "edu" orders and move up their dates. Plus now when they look at the order dates they can't automatically jump on the earliest one to work on.

I work at a very large company and it happens all the time that the high command issues an edict like that and it is up to the peon level people to figure out what it means and how to implement it and often the computer system we have won't let us do it even if we tried.
it was the world's fastest computer when I ordered it!

Don't hold your breath. Apple doesn't exactly have to give anything away.
Just go down to the store and pick one up.

i have been watching for new ship notices for the past week or so, and it seems like there hasn't been a big batch of shipments since around the end of september... (or people have stopped reporting..)

but: as someone suggested in another thread, maybe we can occupy ourselves with the belief that panther is being tooled into the production line? that would be a fair enough perk..

cheers..

No.. I REALLY wanted that gig of ram, BT and 9800...

But I am prob just gonna cancel the order for good. MAYBE order again after the MacWorld in SanFran. I mean, hell, it is only like 4 months after I would get my new one it would be outdated.

Apple cannot afford to loose customers. A small company that relies on loyal user can NOT treat its customers that way.

This pissed me off beyond anyone’s belief to the point where I, a long time die-hard Mac user, may switch...

I am at college now and I am NOT walking blocks to get to a campus computer lab to use the Internet. I might use an OLD SuperMac clone I have at home on system 8.1 till I feel like ordering again... and I may not feel like going through this CRAP again for a LONG time.

Apple just killed itself in my eyes. The G5 is the WORST and best thing that ever happened to Apple. And so far, it is hurting Apple more than it is helping.

Not to rain on your parade, but just because Apple announces something doesn't mean you're getting it the next day. I feel for you regarding your order situation, but remember that for every problem a person posts on these forums, there are hundreds of people silently waiting as well out there. Even if Apple announces a new machine in Jan, if probably won't ship untill March. (PB 17" anyone?)
Don't get down on Apple. Trust me, the last thing they want is to piss off customers and lose business. It's not like a bunch of drunk teenagers are running the shipping dept there, "I could ship this today, but... I'm lazy..."
They are getting them out the door as fast as humanly possible.

He ordered it in the last week of July. We're in the first week in October and he's still waiting. How can he not get down on Apple?

I know the problem ;p "Got" just sounds more pissed off! ;-)

ANYHOW. After bitching Apple out and got my Oct 21st letter... Apple shipped my computer last night and got here overnight priority!

Pretty amazing... so start bitching! The guy on the phone hardly said a word, I just kept goin. I guess it worked.

BTW: my dual is louder than I heard at the stores. And if I play any game at all, or resize windows fast for a while, the fans REALLY kick in on high.

Weird

well you just wanted your CTO shipped you didn't say anything about it working right.

Bitch some more. It does get the job done because retailers don't want to deal with angery customers they would rather lose $500 in merchandise than lose $500 in man hours and even more in bad press.

True they are losing out both ways here but hey ask yourself would Dell do this? They have screwed over many of my friends who I couldn't get to switch over because they had too much money rapped up in software for windows.
