Ok... this may seem dumb to some of you but heres my story...

In the last 2 months I've had so many problems with my G5 order from Apple that basically my date has gone from 8/29 to 10/28... a pain in the ass..

I ordered a stock machine, only opting out of the superdrive for a combo drive...

For fun, the last time apple madea mistake, I called my university and ordered a stock machine from them (dual).

Today my university calls me and tells me it's in and I can pick it up any time... so I call apple and they're still saying October 28th.

It would seem smart to just pick up the University stock right? Well I dunno

I've heard that the superdrive burns regular CD's slower and I'm really worried about if I get a dud from the university... I could be waiting months for a new one... I know if I keep my order with Apple and something goes wrong they'll **** another unit to me immediately and have me ship this one back.... the university will not do it.

What do you guys think? I really need this machine fast but I want to avoid any problems.

Opinions are greatly appreciated

Go get the stock Dual G5 at the university.

If you really need a fast CD burner you can always buy one ($70) and put it into a firewire enclosure ($50). This way you can also copy Cd's on the fly as well.

Having a DVD burner is a nice option for backing up your personal files with its 4.7gb capacity.

What about panther too? If Panther really does come out this month, how can I prove to apple (I suppose other than a receipt) that it was purchased this month and get a free copy of Panther? Or is that option only good if you order from the Apple store?

I dumped my silly online apple store order and bought it at my local apple store. I agree with rhogue islander if you really need a faster burner buy one I'm sure the power drive is good enough. I havn't burned anything as of yet so I can't tell you

The one thing I wanted to know is if you officially saw anything that says you get a free copy of Panther. I havn't seen anything that has said that only heard of a few people saying there apple store told them they would.

I picture them doing the silly for $19.99 you can have a 10.3 upgrade CD. I hate upgrade cds.

There hasn't been mention of an upgrade path for Panther. The only one I can even imagine happening would be a free upgrade for people who purchase a Mac on or after the day of it's release and even then it'd probably just be an upgrade disc.

I'd MUCH rather own a full copy. It makes reinstalling from a formatted hard drive much easier. I considered this same issue (whether to wait until after Panther was relased to buy my G5) and eventually decided that I'm willing to pay full price for a full install CD.

When I bought my Ibook it was before 10.2, about a month I think. They gave me the $20.00 option and I got an upgrade CD. If they don't give me the option to get the full version I will just have to buy it outright. I never questioned waiting to get my G5 for that reason. I knew I wanted it now 10.3 should improve the G5 enough for any owner to warrent the $129.
